Touristy, crowded, narrow pathways, but still manages to be fun!

Walking on the streets of these area feels like old China, although i think all the buildings are not old. there is a very nice tea house but it is expensive. The dumpling here are very good especially at Nanxiang steamed dumpling both, stand in line you would not regret it.

We enjoyed our walk-through of the Yuyuan Old Street. Lots of touristy shops inter-mingled with local shops. We found some great fried cookies, a few good streetfoods, and after asking some local friends, some awesome xialong bao. The international standards like Starbucks can be found here too. Be aware of people trying to offer you a tea ceremony or to... More

There's a temple that I didn't visit. The whole area is pretty big and all connected. Most of the shops sell similar item though. It was a nice walk around even if you are not planning to spend any money. As I'm feeling lazy to bargain, I went to shops with price display. You can actually find good deals! There... More

Went with guide on day before the Chinese New Years. It was crowded but could easily see everything including the bridge and garden. New Years Day was a very interesting experience to share the local culture for this holiday as the crowds were massive with families enjoying this holiday.

Lots of places to eat (best places seem to have massive queues). Shops quite interesting. Buildings report (I think) but interesting to look at, as they're in the old style.

If you are visiting the Yuyuan gardens make sure you leave enough time to explore Yuyaun Street, the architecture is simply stunning and you will get great photos of traditional Chinese buildings. There are plenty of places to eat and plenty of shops. Make sure you haggle as prices are set for tourists. We managed to get some gorgeous lacquered... More

It's a typical tourist trap area surrounding the Yuyuan garden. The shops make it a bit difficult to find the garden entrance and I missed it the first time going there. The gardens are worth a visit on a quiet day

Cool architecture, well-maintained and nice to see. Very commercialized though, lots of tourists and just lots of souvenirs to buy. Still worth seeing.

Old buildings that now turn to be a shopping area. Lot of shops and food stand, cafe and restaurant. Interesting place to stroll around.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Shanghai’s original walls live on in the curve of the streets that serve as the border to the old city. An aerial view shows a clear circular outline and parts of the original wall are preserved as monuments to the ancient past. The main tourist attraction of Yuyuan (which means Yu garden, though it is often redundantly referred to as Yuyuan Garden) draws hordes of tourists every day, but wandering the streets around the complex reveals more exciting attractions such as food and antique markets. There are also streets lined with shops peddling everyday wares such as Chinese dining ware and craft notions that can be even more enticing to visitors uninterested in the usual tourist fare.
