The Shanghai Library is modern, wide, and about six floors high, with a manicured courtyard behind featuring sculpture and sculptured shrubs. It was busy on a Saturday noon. The casual visitor has access only to the common areas. To enter any of the specialized wings...More

It's hardly an 'attraction,' but it's an okay library with foreigner-friendly interface (in certain areas). Computerized book ordering is in Chinese, but the online search has English and there are English speaking interns at the reception. It's possible to wander in some areas without being...More

While there are technical borders to the area formerly
governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French
Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that
is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While
it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will
sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their
mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area
seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet,
