If you talk with the locals they will tell you to go to Scratch River or the Free hot springs. This is perfect if you are travelling on a shoestring budget as it is FREE! To get there go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will definitely see it. Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Leave your valuables at the hotel and just bring a towel and prepare to relax.

We wanted to visit the hot springs while near Arenal, and we visited this place and also got a day pass to Baldi. This location was perfect! This thermal river is all-natural--it hasn't been landscaped and artificially molded and tampered with like the resort facilities. It's beautiful and forested, and the water temperatures change as you move up and down the... Literally the same hot springs as the nearby hotels. We went at night and also during the day time. Night definitely made for more of an experience (daytime is still worth it but you really see where you are! Under a road, which sort of takes away from the magic). Definitely bring a flashlight and pack light. Best to just... More

Don't pay for hot springs........this is just as good and doesn't cost $70! It is easily found by driving from La Fortuna towards Lake Arenal just past Tabacon hot springs there is a yellow barrier on the right side of the road. Parking is on the road and you simply walk past the yellow barrier down to the springs. When... More

We found this local hang after researching on the internet and it was the hit of our trip. It's hard to miss next to the Tabacon Springs but parking is a dicey proposal. Bring water shoes to protect your feet and keep little ones away from the lower rapids. The locals are here and friendly, a great soak in natural... More

After a day on the Parque Nacional Volcan Arenal we stopped here for some relaxing time. It was fun for an hour or so. Bring something to drink as there is no possibilty to buy something there. The parking is a bit of issue, as it has to be on the roadside, and space is limited.

Drive towards Tabacon Hot Springs from La Fortuna downtown. After you pass it on your left, there will be plenty of cars parked on the street. Find a spot and you will see yellow metal bars on the right side of the road. This is the marking for the Free Hot Springs. Follow the path and you will get there... More

We first attempted to visit at night. Bad idea, too sketchy. We returned on a whim during the day and are glad we did. When you first walk down it does not look awesome. But one you walk 20 meters to the left or right you come across a beautiful hot spring. Not a pool with water from the hot... More

Because we were traveling during slow season for Costa Rica, we had the hot springs to ourselves for most of the time. It might not be the cleanest environment, but it is worth checking out. I wouldn't recommend bringing anything you don't want wet/can't carry with you. In all, we spent about two hours there. It's a nice little spot,... More

We where warned to go here by the guy renting the car to us. He said ppl couöd break in the car. We drive by the fancy hotsprings and concluded it wasn't for us. And went on to check this out every out. There where a lot of ppl and cars. But it didn't seam like any more risk than... More
