If you talk with the locals they will tell you to go to Scratch River or the Free hot springs. This is perfect if you are travelling on a shoestring budget as it is FREE! To get there go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will definitely see it. Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Leave your valuables at the hotel and just bring a towel and prepare to relax.

This was our second time here this year. I absolutely love this spot in La Fortuna. A few tips: (1) Don't bring valuables with you, (2) Wear water shoes if you can as there are some bigger rocks and you can then walk more upstream and away from the people, (3) Bring a few beers!, and (4) Bring a few... Okay so the entrance is not nice but once youre there is really nice . It is a free hot spring. I went with my parents , my brother and my fiance and we had a great time. You shouldnt be there to long since the water is really hot and that could be unhealthy (if youre there more than... More

This was an fun adventure to take on and enjoy some free natural hot springs along with the locals and other visitors who have discovered it. The place is along the same road as many of the hot springs locations run by hotels and other establishments. However, this place was free and run under a bridge on the road and... More

These hot springs are easily accessible and it's a great way to spend a few hours steeping in the pools of hot water flowing down from the volcano. It can get busy on weekends or holidays so the best time to visit would be to visit in the morning or first half of the day, generally also the time when... More

We went in the late afternoon to this spot, across the street from Tapacon (the second entrance if you are driving west) and parked on the street. The experience was great, made even better by the fact that it wasn't a fancy resort. It is really just a hot river without any frills and we loved it for that. If... More

We went there after a long all day hike and it was a much needed! Hot, steamy and relaxing, the force of the river makes it feels like a jacuzzi. This is free and natural, so bear in mind that ofcourse there are no changing rooms or lockers etc so all don't bring too many valuables with you. Plus if... More

This is the same river directly across the street from Tabacon. We were disappointed not to be able to get reservations at Tabacon, but probably had more fun with this experience than we would have had at the tourist attraction. I went in the afternoon to scout out the area, then brought the kids after dark for a hot springs... More
