Citizens of Sarchi, Costa Rica constructed the World’s largest ox cart, to receive recognition from Guinness Book of World Records in 2006, placing the small city on the map. Quite cleverly, this has resulted in tourists finding their way to the center square of Sarchi, to view this huge oxen cart, brightly painted in primary colors. This has also become a recognizable icon of Costa Rica. Local shops produce & sell various smaller sizes of the cart, as well as an assortment of nicely crafted wood carvings. Interesting side stop & a great place to purchase a souvenir in nearby stores.

Though the town is small and the park where this is located is small, you can park on either side of the park and take pictures with this gigantic Carreta, beautifully painted according to the Costa Rican themes, flowers and other symbols.

During some weekends, you can even see fairs, where you can buy local produce.

During Lent, there are religious events but during the pandemic, things might be simpler.

You can also admire the Church building that is very unique among the Church architectural styles found in CR.

We visited this cart factory as part of a tour group and it is located right on the road with limited parking in the front of the artisan’s souvenir shop. In the back is where the cart production is completed.
The tour was informative and we were shown the old mill wheel that still powers the means to hand craft these beautiful carts. Then we watched as the artisans hand painted the designs. There are several carts on the small property. The Costa Ricans still use carts for many of their tasks.
The store is very nice with a large selection of artisan souvenirs including wood and painted items with reasonable pricing and they will ship for a slightly high fee.
All of the staff was very friendly and helpful.
There are also beautiful hand painted murals on the walls outside as well.
The restrooms were roomy and clean.

Trapped in a caged area, this painted cart is huge. Great setting in a park in front of the church. Worth a few minutes stop!

We pass by this Carreta many times a week. It is a safe mid-town gathering place for families with children. Right in behind the Carreta is a new playground for little kids. There are places to sit among the nice vegetation filling the park. It is a main stop for tourist buses, so there are usually other nationalities roaming around enjoying the peaceful setting.
