We did the horseback riding tour, which was lovely. The Aquiares waterfall was a highlight (bring your swim suit if you want to take a dip!). Our guides were super friendly and shared so much information. The seating at the restaurant afterwards was breathtaking. I wish we could have stayed for lunch!

A lot of good and new information. The tour guide was from Athens, Georgia but was a Tico and did a great job!!!!! Athens had a great reply to my question about the business being Carbon Neutral. Excellent job.

I just returned from an exhilarating Agritourism adventure in Costa Rica, where a half-dozen friends and I stayed at the exquisite Hacienda “La Esperanza”, part of the Aquiares cafetalera (or coffee farm). This historic plantation has recently been opened to the public so all can enjoy its many spectacular amenities. The Hacienda itself is a historic farmhouse whose charm has been carefully retained following a recent restoration, which preserved the original broad wooden plank flooring, beadboard ceilings, and spacious layout. Local artwork is displayed throughout the residence along with local flowers and plants. The bedrooms are spacious, with high ceilings and brightly painted colorful walls. There are modern conveniences, too, like excellent Wi-Fi service, surprising in a mountainous area like this.

The Hacienda opens up to a spectacular tropical garden with manicured local trees and flowers. Excellent birding is only steps from the outdoor dining area from which there are gorgeous views of the Turrialba volcano and the nearby town with its historic 19th century church. The staff is delightful—helpful and friendly—and the food is outstanding, with many local dishes to sample that use fresh local vegetables and fruits.

Aquilares is actually the largest sustainable coffee farm in Costa Rica, with an active coffee bean processing plant located on the grounds. The farm’s coffee has earned several notable distinctions, including being “Rainforest Alliance Certified” and officially designated as “carbon neutral”. One fun activity is touring this facility to see how coffee beans are extracted from the coffee “cherry” that are picked from the farm’s own coffee trees, dried and then packaged for export. A highlight of the tour is a coffee tasting, where you can sample the finished product. Try your hand at grading different coffee varieties … robusta, arabica, … and see how you stack up to the pros in rating them for aroma, taste, acidity, etc. There’s a wonderful gift shop where you can buy local artisanal products, including bags of roasted coffee beans to bring home.

Supporting their sustainability efforts, Aquiares also has a very extensive experimental farming program where they try out novel crosses among different coffee plants to make their trees resistant to pests and diseases, while still producing the highest quality beans.

The 2000+ acre farm has about 40 miles of well-groomed trails to explore. The vegetation is as varied as the many microclimates on the farm, ranging from rainforest to alpine habitats. Needless to say, the farm is a birder’s paradise, with flycatchers, rainbow-billed toucans, etc. among over a hundred other species. There are two large rivers on either side of the farm each with spectacular waterfalls. Horseback riding is the best way to explore the farm. Horses are available to rent at the farm’s stables. I’m not an experienced rider and found the “caballos” calm and friendly. A “caballero” from the farm helped us navigate the many trails and paths and pointed out worthwhile sites to visit.

Affiliated with Aquilares is another Costa Rican farm that grows sugar cane. The owners have used pressings from the cane to make a myriad of agricultural products, including several different types of artisanal rum, which come highly recommended. Guests can request a rum tasting at the Hacienda where the local Aquiares rum is pitted against other commercial brands.

While there’s a lot to do on the farm, there are many wonderful day trips to take from Aquilares. Above all, one should visit the nearby Turrialba volcano that rises steeply up from the back fields. Take a car through small towns and picturesque farms to the volcano’s Base Station and then start your hike to the top. On a clear day you can see the volcano’s crater and the ocean! There are beautiful views to enjoy even if you don’t make it all the way up. If you are interested in local agriculture, visit “CATIE”, that is both a botanical garden and a tropical agricultural research center. There’s also the Guayabo National Monument, which is Costa Rica’s most significant archaeological site.

Overall, Aquiares is wonderful destination, particularly for small groups, like wedding parties, reunions of families and friends, and the like. An outstanding venue!

A big highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. The house is beautiful, the grounds are like the garden of Eden. The staff was so unbelievably pleasant and kind that it felt like you were staying with family. We did the 4-hour horseback tour and our guides, Andrew and Christian, were extremely knowledgeable and just an overall great hang. The views were stunning— it felt like a tour of paradise, including the scenic waterfall we detoured. Only regret was not staying long enough and as soon as we got in the car to leave we felt sad to depart. Can’t praise Aquiares enough—will definitely return here for an even longer stay.

The Aquiares coffee tour was one of the highlights of our Costa Rica trip! So neat to visit the oldest and largest coffee estate in the country and to learn about their high quality (Rainforest Alliance certified) process. We loved visiting the local Aquiares community, and the coffee was ah-mazing.

Andrew was an awesome tour guide too. He took our favorite picture from the entire trip of us standing in front of the beautiful Tree of Life. Highly recommend Aquiares Coffee tour!

What an amazing experience! We had a lovely drive through the mountains to reach Aquaires. We were greeted by Andrew and started with a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, breads and the most delicious passionfruit jam I have tasted. We then met the horses and took off through the coffee plantation. I'm not an avid rider, but the horse was gentle and easy to ride.

We stopped to pick coffee beans to get an idea of what the typical worker would have to accomplish to earn a wage. Trust me - this is an experience. We then rode the horses and hiked a little to a beautiful waterfall. After returning to the Casa we had a lovely lunch, followed by a tour of where the coffee is processed. During all this time, Andrew was there to answer any questions that might arise and to share a wealth of knowledge regarding coffee, the plantation and Costa Rica in general.

The coffee tour was very informative, starting with the growth of the coffee plants all the way to the final bagging. We were lucky enough to do a cupping session because we wanted to buy green coffee beans in bulk to bring back to our cafe in the states. The rest of the group did a coffee tasting.

This was the highlight of our trip and we learned so much. the experience is a memory made with so much to learn and remember. I highly recommend.

The tour was amazing as Cesar and Andrew explained a lot about the process of coffee from the nusery to the shippment as well as the history of the hacienda and the people that work here. The coffe tasting at the and was very delicous and a great final after two hours. We were in a small group - just two cuples - so thete was plenty of time for questions. We would recommend to do this tour when you are in the area.
