Just looking at the volcano can be breathtaking. We did the Arenal 1968 hike while there. It was amazing to see the lava flow fields. A very nice hike, strenuous at times.

We enjoyed our 5 hours walking around the national park, but be warned that if you go by public bus it's a good half hour from the bus stop to the entrance.

Good amount of hike! View to Volcano is ok! Great to have the conversation with Guide and see paths where lava flowed. May not be appropriate for family with small kids as hike steps are steep,

We trekked our way up to the observation platform and were able to see the beautiful vegetation growing and watched it turn into the area were the lava flowed and watch that turn into a different type of vegetation, less dense and not as high...More

The park rangers don't speak much English, but with the map they give you you can drive up to the parking space, then you get a nice walk in the forest which brings you to the bottom of the volcano - the trail then goes...More

We could not see the volcano at all, despite having to pay before realizing that. This isn't a trip that you can plan in advance because of poor visibility. We decided to take advantage of the walk around the volcano instead. However, it was not...More

The views of Arenal volcano are amazing. We went to view point first, uphill, then started up the trail towards old lava flows. Lots of birds around, saw guam { like big turkeys sat in a tree - spectacular, montezuma oropendola and more. Lots of...More

The view is amazing, the walk at the national park to a lava site was very easy and worth it to see such a different sight. The area offers great volcano views

I went on a tour through the park, and I enjoyed every minute of it. It's a heck of a walk, and many parts are up steep hills, so keep that in mind. Fortunately, the volcano was very clear during my trip (May 2017).

Gorgeous area, very interesting... with relaxing hot springs all around. One of our favorite spots in Costa Rica!

Family of 4 that will be staying 2 nights at Hotel Los Lagos and plan to spend one morning/afternoon hiking near the volcano. I can find lots of information about guided tours, but nothing really about driving to the park on our own (we'll have a rental car), were to park, how much it is to get in, is there a park station, marked trails, etc. Any info or website links would be appreciated.

I would ask the hotel when you get there - they should have all the info you require.
A lot of the tours I see for the National Park are $60 upwards. Are there trails that you can self navigate or cheaper tours at the park?

Yes. I believe it is called the 1962 Trail, or something like that. You do not need a guide. It's about $10 to enter the park. If your goal is a good hike with good views, no guide necessary. We saw very few people with... More
Thanks for all the tips...What was the weather like throughout the park? I imagine that it changes based on altitude... just wondering if a (light) jacket is needed or recommended. Thanks in advance.

Light jacket won't be bad, but it is going to be hot and humid. Carry a rain jacket instead. We carried a rain buster jacket something like this (Look for "Columbia Men's Watertight II Front-Zip Hooded Rain Jacket" in... More
