Kinda sad little zoo but some interesting creatures here if you don't mind them caged up...Some light snacks and drinks served. Saw a very sad sloth living in an enclosure with no trees!

The Simon Bolivar Parque Zoo was closed when I attempted to visit. The main steel gates were chained and pad-locked shut, with other entrances also closed. No staff were on site to give any advice as to when the zoo would be open again. I visited around 1.30pm and spent approximately 30 minutes ascertaining the zoos status as open or... More

The zoo is small in size and the enclosures themselves were very small as well. This made the experience a little hard for me. Good points though, not too many people visiting so it was not crowded around the animals and the stroll through the zoo was peaceful.

Many of the enclosures in this zoo are unacceptable. The poor sloth had not a single tree to climb on and was desperately trying to reach branches through the bars of its cage. Some of the enclosures were so so but what really was horrendous about this zoo was the lion enclosure. Tiny, concrete, very little shelter in the enclosure... More

I think we were the only people at the zoo yesterday morning and we had the zoo all to ourself. It is a nice quiet green space in the middle of busy urban San Jose. The living spaces of the jaguar and the lion are deplorable. On the flip side, I have never been so close to the king of... More

We had a day to kill until we had to leave Costa Rica, and saw this zoo close by. It was about $5 a person, so we decided to check it out. It wasn't bad for the price you pay per person, however, when you look at the animals conditions, it is very heartbreaking. You can see the lion's bones... More

Went there with my kid (9) on a Saturday morning. It's rainy season, so it's good to get your outdoor stuff over in the morning, and this fit the bill. It's a pretty small facility (we saw the whole thing in an hour) that seems a generation back in zoo style. I think it serves its purpose of providing an... More

The feel is that much has to be done, but the approach is correct and there is evidence of the efforts being done. When we visited, the garden and zoo were undergoing big revamping and maintenance jobs. Many areas were either closed or minimized. On the other hand, both animals and plants were carefully posted with careful, clear identification, description... More

I hear this zoo is to close and that is the feel it exudes. The animals and birds actually looked in OK condition but most cages too small and with no or very limited enrichment opportunities for the animals. Ridiculously cheap entrance fee and mainly locals on the day I went. It represents what zoos used to be and most... More
