This is a long overdue review. I went on a day trip with the Talkeetna River Guides last summer and we really had a great time. The boat ride was great as were the on-land activities. But what I liked the most were the guides themselves - so entertaining - real Alaskan characters!

We signed up for the Wilderness Living Adventure and Dog Cart Tour expecting to receive what was advertised. It sounded interesting and from the promotional ads on the Denali hotel TV it looked like it would be worthwhile. There were only 3 of us picked up at the McKinley Chalet and driven to Cantwell. There were no trappers, fur pelts,... More

The Wilderness Living Adventure and Dog Cart Ride provides an interesting way to learn about the lifestyles of various people who live in this beautiful place. The first stop was at a riverside camp in Denali National Park where we heard about the way of life of the ‘locals’ and how these people cope with living in such extremes of... More

Ed, the driver picked us up at the Princess Lodge. He gave interesting facts about the area and his personal history in Alaska while he drove. At the destination, the host (whose name I forgot) served hot chocolate and a warm snicker doodle type of cookie treat. He told about the predators in the area and hunting. He had furs... More

The talk about the pelts was interesting. But that is about it!!! The panning for gold was absolutely a waste of time. You will find maybe 3 slivers of gold. I did not even bother doing that one. The rest of the group I was with did it. And they were not very excited about finding their slivers. Looking at... More

I chose a Jet boat tour to enjoy the river and the Denali scenery around me Zebra mountains, stood tall behind the trees near the waters edge, as the boat engine moved steadily thru the river The tour also gave me the opportunity to pan for gold at their park and to see wild animals up close They offered refreshments... We had a few minutes of somewhat interesting talk about trappers and the pelts on display, and hot cocoa and a few bites of a cinnamon treat they called a beaver tail. Then we got to "pan for gold" with a trough of water and seeded pans. We did get to keep the tiny amount of gold flakes. 2 poor... More

We took a coach bus to a little set up about 20 minutes off site from the hotel. We were given hot chocolate and the equivalent of a funnel cake from the State Fair and then had an interesting talk about hunting, trapping, and there were animal pelts we could touch. No one was very interested, even our "guide" was... More

My husband and I were the only two signed up for the dog cart ride. Now I know why. We were driven by bus to the location of the excursion. The "wilderness experts" then gave us a presentation about furs and trapping. The talk was about trapping quotas and methods aka how to make money trapping in Alaska. It was... More

I've been on numerous jetboat rides around the world and by comparison, this is just a fast ride up the river and back. No exciting turns or action you would expect from a jetboat. The ride is less than an hour and then there is an hour educational talk about Alaskan animals and furs and you get to pan for... More
