A classic valley hike for both locals and visitors. The Butte is about an 800ft elevation gain and the top has a 360 degree view of the valley featuring the Knik Glacier, Lazy Mountain, Sleeping Lady and Pioneer Peak. The "old side" (by the reindeer farm) is a more adventurous climb commonly used by locals. You'll find steep slopes, great... More

This is a favorite hike for us. We prefer the route starting from Mothershead Lane. Approximate one mile hike with a lot of stairs. Well worth the effort as when you reach the top you get a 360-degree panorama with great views of the Knik Glacier, Pioneer Peak, Matanuska, the Cook Inlet and lots of farmland around Palmer and Butte.

A relatively easy walk before hitting stairs up the steep sections. Approximately 800 foot elevation gain, a bit of a work out, but there are several obvious places to take a breather and enjoy the growing views if needed. The effort is rewarded by great views in all direction. Our timing not the best being just after midday on a... More

This is a beautiful hike that is relatively easy, depending on the speed at which you engage the climb. There are quite a few stairs but if you take your time there's no problem with this hike and once you're on top you'll enjoy the view!

Amazing view. Two path a long winding, some places are steep. But good for the novice climber. Take water...good shoes and go with friends. The shorter way is across the street from Reindeer farm. Steep, short and rocky and dusty in some places. Take water, depending on weather take light jacket. ..parking..5.00 The view is awesom, and breathtaking. Can see... More

A moderate pace will get you to the top in about 30-35 minutes. There are a lot of steps! But it's better than it used to be when it was one long slide! It's through the woods most of the way, but opens up a few hundred yards from the top. There it becomes a meadow with good wildflowers about... More

We hiked ot the top of the butte as a family. It took about 20 minutes to get to the top, walking rather quickly. It's got a lot of stairs, so those with very small children or bad joints might want to plan for more time. But the views of the Palmer area, Knik glacier, etc are fantastic. Highly recommended.

Using the well maintained trail with stairs of the west/north side, this hike is one of the best in this area. The view from the top of the butte is spectacular from valley floor to glacier to mountain top. Although some of the trail is steeper in places, the stairs make it easy for just about anyone to climb...just take... More

Climbed the Butte Saturday morning for yoga on Butte. Had a great time was a good workout with Midnight Sun Yoga. Just love to climb the Butte. Like the stairs side better than other other free climbing side.

The trip up the West Trail is exciting, and then stair-filled. But, if the day is clear, the views are spectacular. Parking is $5, and you need to pay it, don't park on the road.
