I used to go Melville a lot at the end of the 90s, and it went into a downward trend at the end of the decade, lots of drugs and fights, didn't feel at all safe. Now though ( for the past couple of years ) there has been a real rejuvenation, with some of the old bars and restaurants... More

Melville has had a long history as a trendy area and there are some stalwarts that have been going for a long time. The addition of 27 Boxes has provided a central point for some interesting little shops and a great bar / restaurant. Clyde's on Fourth for antiques and Lamp Berger still out favorite. Lots of interesting places to... More

My husband and I stayed in the delightfully appointed Bird room at the Lucky Bean Guest House where we were very well cared for by the staff, We also had the opportunity of visiting the main street of Melville with its eclectic variety of cafes and restaurants with its vibrant atmosphere.where we enjoyed a meal.

We stayed in a guesthouse in the neighbourhood for a couple of nights a had a wonderful time here. Several nice places to go for a drink, good restaurants with value-for-money around the corner and some nice shops, especially in the Boxes area.

Melville has become quiet trendy over the years but it is looking a bit tired now and the pavements are a mess. There are a cluster of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops in this small suburb of Johannesburg. Parking is an issue so be warned. Needs refreshing somehow!

Crazy to admit living in Jhb, but had avoided Melville for some time since it was, frankly, becoming a bit of a dump. Pleasantly surprised recently to find a surge of interesting new restaurants in the main road.
