The original rustic homestead would have been more interesting instead of this modern epitaph to a concept rather than the harsh reality of a time of secrets and clandestine meetings in quiet suburban homes where families participated in a movement so important and yet so fraught with danger.

Highly developed site with theatre and cafeteria, itself now in a developed area of Joburg so losing any sense of remoteness and secre y it may have once had. Some good stuff here but don't expect to spend more than an hour or two at most. Fascinating story nonetheless and a key location in the history of the birth of... More

If you're interested in the history of Nelson Mandela, this interactive museum is a great place to visit. Especially if you've been to the Apartheid Museum and Robben Island. This is where Mandela and those who were helping him fight against apartheid, were found and arrested.

Being from the US and born around the time this all happened, I was simply fascinated and saddened by this story of oppression. There was so much information available that our tour time of one hour could only skim the surface. If you truly want to absorb the wealth of information presented here plan on at least 3-4 hours. It... More

This farm is outside of Sandton and near Johannesburg. The farm was a clever hideaway for Nelson Mandela and other ANC leaders during days of apartheid. It consists of a visitor's center, the original farmhouse and a number of outbuildings. It is a good supplement to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg as you will ready learn even more about the... I came to South Africa embarrassingly ignorant. I knew so little about apartheid and absolutely nothing about the Rivonia Treason trials. Liliesleaf is a great first introduction for anyone but especially for anyone with a keen interest to learn. There is so much history here. Liliesleaf was just about command central for the resistance for quite a while. Come and... More

This museum is well worth a visit. It is a fascinating look at South African history and a great insight into the struggle the ANC were faced with back in the 1950's and onwards.

The story of living under apartheid in general and the courage of Nelson Mandela and his compatriots is well captured on the site of was once a rural small-holding.

I really appreciated seeing the actual buildings where this part of the history of the struggle against apartheid took place. (In his "Long Walk to Freedom" autobiography, Mandela describes his time living here under an alias and the raid that led to the Rivonia Trial.) The displays are extremely well-designed, interactive and informative. They put the role of the property... More

Liliesleaf Farm Wonderfully restored as an interactive museum to commemorate the point in history when the leaders of MK (newly formed military wing of the ANC) were arrested by the government police at their hideout at a pivotal stage of the apartheid struggle, leading the Rivonia trial. Provides a gripping realisation of the immense humanitarian sacrifice Mandela & his fellow... More
