Alexander Bar, Cafe & Theatre is Cape Town's buzzing conversation bar. It's filled with old-world charm and innovative touches like old fashioned phones which you can use to order a drink or to chat up people at other tables. Upstairs there's a 40 seater theatre which is Cape Town's busiest stage with more than 10 performances per week - check the website and get discounted ticket prices if you book online. The kitchen serves great light meals til midnight and keep an eye out for fabulous daily specials.

I was lucky enough to visit Alexander Bar, Cafe & Theatre three times in short succession: twice to see a show in the theatre and once to participate in their pub quiz. The theatre was really 'something else': it's tiny, yes, but I haven't experienced...More

The visit was fine but I had read great things, and about how kinda kooky the bar was etc, so I was a little disappointed once we actually got there. The drinks were ok, service was ok. Nothing has really stuck with me and I...More

Perfect for a theatre and dinner evening. But tonight was just a quick pop in for a night cap after we saw a bother show at City Hall. Bar and kitchen was still open after 11pm. Stunning little chill out venue. Love it here.More

Thank you! One of the reasons we've insisted since we opened on keeping the kitchen open til midnight is exactly to cater for people coming after shows at other venues, following our own personal disappointment trying to scare up a sit-down meal after 22h30 in...More

An ancient building houses a comfortable cafe, a great bar in its centre, an intimate theatre upstairs, and an open area from which to watch the passers-by in comfort. It has a warm feeling about it, and seems always full of chatter. The food is...More

Inclusive queer bar with a theater upstairs. They also have an awesome menu, the aubergine dish is especially yum. It has a sit down vibe with quirky, comfortable chairs. Every table has an antique phone where you can call the other tables!

Thank you for your kind words. For the record we don't especially label ourselves as a queer/gay bar, we are home to all sorts, even the terminally straight :-) Glad you like the parmigiana! Thanks. Nicholas.

I took in dinner and a show at Alexander Bar yesterday evening. The bar atmosphere is quirky, unpretentious and comfortable. Great food at reasonable prices with a very friendly and efficient wait staff. The theatre itself is small and intimate, which encourages a real connection...More

Alexander Bar is definitely different to the type of bar that I would ordinarily visit, but enticed by the theatre I dragged my husband along for an evening of Three Tonnes of Fun. We had exactly that. The bar was quirky and interesting although I...More

We are big fans of small intimate theater. We were fortunate enough to be able to attend two performances in the five days we were visiting Capetown. Both were single performer one-act plays and both quite enjoyable. We saw and recommend Love Me Tinder and...More

Hi Lynn Glad you enjoyed the show and cheese platter, and apologies for the poor service. Our air-conditioner is not coping with Cape Town summer again, and we're having it upgraded in the new year. We're also investing some additional fridges. We will have a...More
