Took the boat trip out to the island and had an official guided tour. The fact the guide was an ex inmate made the talks even more poignant. Very moving.

I grew up in South Africa and left at 18 years having never been to Robben Island. My kiwi partner and I did this trip and found it to be incredibly moving and very informative/educational. My partner likened it to as emotional as his trip...More

I’ll get the disappointing bit out the way - our comparison to Alcatraz and also The Khmer Rouge Prison in Cambodia, saw it fail to give the experience and information it promised, and therefore any emotional connection. There is also a lot of waiting around,...More

They changed things since I last went. It is sadly much more commercial with a horrid building having been built at the far end of the Island in a beautiful empty, windswept spot. Madeba would be disappointed. However you get to see the main sights,...More

An important and historical place. A must see when in Cape town. But really only once. Busloads of tourists are shipped, bussed and spoken to as if you are in a touristfactory. The guids knew there story by hart and even the jokes were probably...More

This was a great day trip to do and the fact that it is ex prisoners doing the tour is fantastic. Our guide was so knowledgable and made the experience so much better.

We enjoyed our visit to Robben Island, and enjoyed seeing the island, town, and prison. I know a lot of people want to see this attraction, and we had great guides, but the groups are really larger than practical. If you don't stay up with...More

We were in cape town for 4 days and tix were sold out for the ferry. Really bummed i couldnt go. So buy tix ahead of time if planning to go. Not sure about refund policies because weather does have an impact on ferry rides.

Their is so much rich HISTORY to learn and to be seen here. All should be educated on what South Africa, as a whole, has been through. Very eye opening experience

Just a tip, if you do buy online and go to pick up the tickets at the ferry you will need your passport. I saw people get refused because they did not have their passport when collecting tickets.

Keep an eye on the website. They update it early in the morning and it should tell you whether or not the tours are running.
