The Swartberg pass has fantastic scenery. The rock formations are awesome and the fact it was created so long ago is mind blowing. The dirt road was in good condition and we were driving a hire car. The drive up to Prince Albert is well worth doing and there are lovely cafes and places to eat there. We came back... More

Do not be nervous to drive on a dirt road. My sister and I easily made the trip in a small sedan. Take it slowly and enjoy the drive. The scenery is breathtaking. We stopped many times to experience the quiet and breathe in the Karoo. The pass is literally full of pleasant surprises. A must do and don't rush... More

This pass is absolutely gorgeous, as can be seen in various other reviews. Wonderful rock formations, with spectacular geological history written in the broken and twisted cliff faces. The sheer drops were enough to make my stomach turn. All I have to add is that in one morning we managed to see all six fynbos endemic bird species, with particularly... More

The gravel road was not a hindrance at all and the entire drive was just enthralling from start to finish! Well worthwhile a trip and the scenery is nothing but dazzling all the way through! One gets a 360 degree "Vista" of the Little Karoo to the South and the Great Karoo to the North from the summit "Die top"... More

We had heard and read much about the pass; we were underwhelmed by it. The views are good of the valleys below. The road was in good condition when we drove up. The passes in the European alps or the Lake District in the UK are far more spectacular and scary!

The drive from start to finish was a delight. Stunning scenery. The road surface is gravel and climbs to 5100 feet. The drive down the far side is even more stunning from Outshoorn . The 42 kilometres took nearly 2 hours to complete and the journey back to Outshoorn travelling around Swarthburg to the east was eqallly stunning and we... More

What a view, what a drive! Going up from Oudtshoorn is apparently suggested, but going up or down, the views are amazing. We did it with a simple sedan (Etios) but I would have liked a car which is a bit more robust. Takes 1.5 hours including stops and then another 1.5 back to Oudtshoorn through 'Rust', which is also... Along with another couple we decided to do this Pass. We had heard that you start to climb the Pass and run out of road about half way up and go onto to a gravel path. This intrigued us immensely and we decided to "give it a go"! Good decision & of corse we were driving a hire car! The... More

Great scenery and a fantastic drive. It's worth driving into Prince Albert, the town on the other side of the pass. It's a lovely place with some great cafes.
