We went to the "Enviromental Education Centre of Marim" off the Olhao-Tavira coast road. This is a huge area of woodland, saltmarsh, coast, dunes, saltpans and orchards. There is a tidemill and a visitor centre. Good for walking, plant hunting and birdwatching. There are bird hides, one over a freshwater pond with wild terrapins! Make sure you get the map,... More

An easy 20 minute walk from Olhao. Peaceful sandy paths winding through a small forest of pines and meadows of wild gladioli, orchids and wild lupins. Down to the mill on the shore and lovely views to Armona and lagoon. And a great fish restaurant right by the entrance.

Ria Farmosa is a beautiful place. Unbelievable, the Airport is next to it and the bírd have to live/compete with the planes. Anyway, the experience is seasonal bith due to number of birds and number of people in the area. We went in April, which means less bírds and less people - it was probably the better choice.

The area is an ornithologists delight and you do not need to even enter the reserve to see such gorgeous wildlife. Near our hotel were marshes on the edge of the lagoon with 60-70 species on tap. Made UK offerings like Minsmere pretty average. Spoonbills, Flamingos, Little Egrets, Stilts, gorgeous Sardinian Warblers. They were just queuing up to be photographed... More

Take a boat out, cheap and informative. We used a guided tour set up. A couple of hours depending on tides. Osprey, storks, shanks, and the chap had a lot of information about the sea food farming. Do take a walk in the park area as well...

We wanted to do a trip to Tavira island but the ferry times looked a bit sketchy given we had a flight to catch later in the evening. While driving around I saw a sign for the Ria Formosa Nature reserve and went straight for it given I had read that the whole area (including the island) was part of... More

High tide and low tide reveal so many differences in how you view the Ria Formosa. Can be undertaken with different objectives in mind but whatever they are they will provide insights into a different world. Probably worth following up an initial boat trip by using the ferry to visit specific areas for more detailed study.

April spring flowers everywhere, soft dappled light , terrapins swimming, storks, egrets and other birds can be observed from hides or just enjoyed as you stroll.

There are many ways to experience the beauty of the Rio Formosa. Your first glimpse may be when you fly over the park on the approach to Faro Airport. You can take a boat trip, a guided tour or go for a walk. We chose to visit the Marim Environmental Education Centre and followed one of the circular trails. The... More
