"El Galpón de Catalinas" is a unique and memorable experience developed by a group of neighbours in the all-time "porteño" area of La Boca. I strongly recommend both for locals and foreigners as a pintoresque, yet fresh and autenthic, way to embrace Argentinian history and culture, from a very entertaining point of view. Indie theater, the plays are written and performed by neighbours in La Boca. The plays are usually musicals, language is not an issue. After the militar regime the neighbours began performing in a park, then collectively bought the old barn. Other neighbours grill "choripanes", The firefighters of La Boca are always there as guardians

While in Buenos Aires a local artist friend insisted that I had to see the current show at the Grupo de Teatro Catalinas Sur. What followed was one of the most memorable nights I have had in ages. This theater bills itself as neighborhood theater, but the quality of the show I saw was well beyond my expectations. The intimate... More

Staying in La Boca

Neighbourhood Profile
La Boca
A neighbourhood defined by its immigrant roots, La Boca still maintains this past alive in its streets today. Due to its proximity to the river, the neighbourhood became the preferred settling area for immigrants of a wide variety of origins, who ended up living together in the conventillos. Thus, these houses became a melting pot of different cultures and traditions that birthed creations like tango and lunfardo. Nowadays, this legacy can be seen and felt on Caminito Street, which welcomes visitors with colourful facades, cobblestones, and street artists showcasing their skills. Just like its neighbor San Telmo, La Boca is one of the prime destinations to experience the traditions and customs that originated from the city’s immigrant past and which have shaped its distinct identity.
