Very unusual landscape and interesting to see a working salt flat. The on-site restaurant is currently closed due to rain damage but is interesting because it is made out of salt bricks. The icy mirror effect of the wet salt is uncanny - great reflections...More

Admittedly, we didn't have perfect weather with a nice blue sky, but the rain clouds offered a different decor. Compared to Uyuni, the top layer of salt is a bit dark grey, so not so spectacular. However, even with less than perfect weather conditions, the...More

First the trip through the mountains to get there (spectacular), then the salt flats....it looks like a barren desert (many miles long) made of of 'ice'. I have seen nothing like this and so felt it worth the trip. Having a guide provide explanations helps,...More

Visiting the Salinas Grandes is a unique experience, it's a cross between walking in the arctic and on the moon! You can walk on the salt flats and the pictures just don't do the place justice.

Beatiful and indeed very large salt flat. The tour going on to the lake with a guide is recommended as he can explan about the mining of the salts and the history.

Way up in north Argentina, about a five hour ride from Salta, or about 2.5 hours from Purmamarca (a great lunch stop), this 220 sq km of the great salt flat is stunning. You can walk on the salt bed (an inch or so of...More

For 250 pesos I went on a half day trip from Purmarmarca to the Salinas Grandes in a mini van. Drive over took around 2.5 hours. We stopped twice for pictures i.e. on the highest crossing point. Saw a pack of vicuñas and a guarnacos....More
