It took six hours total from the road snack bar at Rio Lopez to the Refugio Lopez and Back. Quite steep most of the way but no scary passages or big drop offs. Great Views most of the way. Lots of loose rock and dirt make a slippery hike down. I would carry two liters of water per person as... More

We took the direct bus 10 leaving at 7:10 from the centre in Bariloche. We arrived at about a quarter to 8. The trail is marked with red-white signs and early in the hike you can see the pink house on you right at the top of the mountain, which is Refugio Lopez. The first hour/hour and a half is... More

You do not need to climb "Cerro López"! For those that are not very fit, travel agencies in San Carlos de Bariloche organize tours on 4x4 jeep vehicles from the mountain's base up to the "Refugio Extremo Encantado", at 1260m. Snowshoeing for a 40 minute period is a must! Then enjoy a cheese fondue lunch at "Refugio Extremo Encantado". Breathtaking... More

The Trail head is on circuit Chico just beyond the fork to canopy and colonia suiza. It is possible to take bus 10 but apparently it runs less frequently than the schedule suggests. The road has enough traffic and hitch hiking should be easy. The first hour of the hike is steep and dusty. It then flattens out as the... More

Its a steep walk to the top but if you are fit you can make it to the refugio in 90 mins to 2 hours and there is public transport (although not all that frequent) to the base. The views are amazing - and you are rewarded also with getting a good workout at the same time!!

For us, this was quite a strenuous day's walk (we are both 60 and fairly fit) but well worth it for the views all the way up, as well as the stunning panorama at the summit, including Cerro Tronador. We stopped for two short breaks at the Refugio Lopez on the way up and down (with a beer on the... More

It's a steep way up to Cerro Lopez, back from where the bus drops you off... but the 16km hike is totally worth the effort! As you go up, the view becomes more and more breathtaking. The Roca Negra was closed, but we went all the way to the Abrigo, crossing some patches of recently fallen snow (uncommon in January!).... More
