Sedona is an interesting little town that is surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscape that you will EVER see--by air and by land. This drive is nothing short of spectacular. The vistas and the "close up" views are just plain wonderful--mesmerizing. The whole area is a hikers paradise. As a topper, the weather is typically beautiful as well. I absolutely recommend that you get up to the airport mesa (which has some nice views and a good restaurant), and take the helicopter ride--you will not forget it! I am a native West Virginian, so I know scenic drives. I wish I had kept track of how many times I said, "wow, beautiful or amazing". Good road, but filled with visual distractions.

This is a beautiful drive. But if it's a high holiday season, the road will back up from downtown Sedona for up to 3 miles towards Cathedral Rock -- to a near standstill. Go early morning when the morning sun is lighting up the mountains. By noon, the traffic will ruin the drive. It's a busy place.…

As soon as you get off N17 and on to 179 the drive gets scenic. When you get to the Ranger Visitor Center there is some information outside, but it is better to go into town to talk to the staff. There are stunning views surrounding your drive into Sedona.
