Incredible experience to wake up in the night, to go at the end of the road, to rent a bike, to drive this bike in the dark, to join the ultimate stop, to walk in the dark with unknown people, on lava rocks to join...More

We made it to the Kalapana lava viewing area at around 6:30 a couple of nights ago after riding rented mountain bikes out there. We had plenty of time to see the lava pouring into the ocean, but not enough time to go out into...More

This was perhaps the highlight of our 10 days in Hawaii - asked around to find the location (it's literally at "end of the road" and you'll see signs only if you come South on route 130) and it was worth it! We arrived shortly...More

Details, details ... For perspective: I am 55 years old, in pretty good shape & I went with my son who is 18. 1 - You don't need a bike reservation. Pull up and park - there are multiple vendors renting bikes - shop around...More

I read the reviews AFTER making the trip. Would advise heeding the words of those who successfully made it to the surface flow. We started from Kona at 4 PM. This was much too late. We ran into rush hour traffic (yes, even on the...More

We rented bikes from Kaimu Rentals and road to the viewing area. We took a quick peak at the lava flowing into the ocean and then hiked up to the lava at the base of the hill (away from the ocean). Overall it was a...More

At the end of the road on route 130 and open from 4-9pm, this is a must see if you can walk or ride a bike 4.5 miles in each direction. Bike rentals for $20 come with water, lock and headlamp. You walk or ride...More

We drove to the end of Hwy 130, where there are a number of bike concessions on both sides of the road. We rented mountain bikes from a concession on the right, just past the hotdog stand, for $10 each. For 4 people, we had...More

Even though you're now set back a little from the actual lava flow, it still is truly amazing. We watched in awe at the lava flowing into the ocean like a tap while the waves crashed up against it - it was mesmerising! We hired...More

Bike or walk! Cars can't reach the lava flow area. I would definitely bike. I did the walk and it is the most desolate, hot, uninteresting and long walk ever (at least it feels like it at the time!)
