This church was built in the 1930s by Father Evarest Gielen who also painted the exquisite artwork. The church was endangered by a lava flow in 1990 and the residents decided to move it to its present location, which a trucking company volunteered to do for free. The church is part of the Kalapana Hawaiian Cultural Society. There is no... More

Absolutely beautiful work of art and history. Makes you want to just sit there and admire the great works of art or even drop down on your knees (which I did). So easy to find and everyone knows this place!

the doors were closed when we arrived, & a gal inside cleaning. we peeked thru the windows, admiring the artistry, & the doors opened! so sweet of this gal to allow us a closer look. loads of local history, & contributions, & the acoustics..... my companion has a special voice & when she broke out in song, PINCH ME!!!

This little church has been moved twice out of the path of lava flows. Its history is told on the walls and goes back to Father Damien years when he was a priest on the Puna coast before relocating to Molokai and devoting himself to Hansen's disease patients. Although a small church (that still holds services), it appears much larger... More

Its worth the few minutes it takes to stop and visit this lovely little church and read about its history. Very near Kalapana and easy to find. Smaller than the one on the Kona side but nice.

We enjoyed a tranquil visit to this Church after missing it the last few years. The artwork is a little more rustic than the Painted Church, but it has a lot of interesting features if you take time to look and soak it in. The historical aspect is very nice as well. Please be respectful and remember it's a beloved... More

What a nice place, one of a kind. Very nicely decorated hand painted bible scenes. For such a small place there's a lot going on, you can spend a lot of time here. It would be interesting to attend a service here & I'm not even religious.

Although this painted church may be less often visited than the one on the Kona side, this church was certainly created and cared for with dedication and love. The paintings are boldly colored and depict scenes related to Fr. Damien, who had lived in Kalapana before he left to minister to the leprosy patients on Molokai. The church was moved... More

When you enter this building the whole paint job is a marvelous optical illusion. You feel the need to walk outside and confirm that it is as small as you thought it was. According to the literature this building has been moved twice to save it from lava flows. It just takes a few minutes but well worth the time.
