Senic lake

It's a high altitude lake at a hike of 1hr from dhankar village. It's s step climb so one with breathing problem should avoid it. When we reached this place the water level was level. One can avoid it if going to chandertal lake.

Serene lake reachable after a decent hike
Jun 2019
I was not in the fittest of health, and hiking up to this lake was not easy for me. But thanks to my fellow travelers, I made it. And the journey (the hike) offered wonderful vistas and was as sweet as the result. Though there was a group of noisy travellers, smoking weed and making weird noise on their guitars, otherwise we loved the couple of hours on the bank of the very blue and serene Dhankar Lake. The hike gave a nice completeness to our trip.

Stunning high-altitude lake
Aug 2019
Dhankhar Lake is located in Dhankhar village in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is a 5 km uphill trek from the Dhankhar village along a barren, muddy and dusty path across the mountain range. This is the only way to get to the lake and yes it is a difficult trek. The trek is a true test of fitness and stamina as both are needed to go from a height of 3750 meters to 4200 meters in a matter of hours. The trek witnesses a change of temperature for which extreme endurance is needed as it goes from warm to windy to very cold. The Dhankhar Lake at a height of 4300 meters above sea level is picturesque as it is surrounded by the snow-capped Himalayas and has water coming to it from a glacier. The lake is frozen for about eight months of the year and is only accessible from mid-May to September. The lake is surrounded by shrubs that are characteristic of the region. The lake appears blue and green from different angles.

Dhankar chamatkar ('wonder' in Hindi )
May 2019
Located at an altitude of about 14000 feet, this lake is a good 1 hour trek from Dhankar village. Carry water, the climb is pretty steep though mid way on the trek I stumbled upon nice spring water coming down the hill in a pipe, easy to drink

Once up there, this magical lake changes colors, shimmers in the sun and plays multiple tricks on the mind all with a superb calming effect.

The stupa here is also ancient and I felt wonderful chanting a prayer here. Bumped into a fellow traveller (not tourist ) who was coming here second day on the trot to spot the elusive Himalayan Ibex

Less to be said about this enchanting lake, more to experience

it is totally worth all the pain to get here. Pure and simple beauty. it takes about 2-2.5 hours to trek and reach this lake from the dhankar monastery(where you can park the car). the trek is very steep in some parts and coming down is more difficult than climbing up. its only 1.5km but one takes that long, so you can imagine the difficulty level. i felt short of oxygen while ascending but luckily had kapur(camphor) bands on me to inhale some direct oxygen. it really helped. please dont miss this lake. especially coz we didnt get to do chandertaal coz of the weather

Hardly one hour from Tabo Dhanker monastery is located. But the best thing here is lake which is situated 2 km from the town. You can get here by trekking only. Trek starts near Dhankar Monastery Guest house. Locals say that during noon you can also see fishes in it (though we didn’t see any). It takes atleast 2 hours to come back(one hour to go and half to return) it is 2 km one side. Only thing to consider is that there is less oxygen so it becomes very difficult to trek. Take it slow and keep going. Also keep on drinking lot of water and have chocolates with you for little snack. You will enjoy it a lot.

Spectacular lake

The hike to Dhankar lake starts near the car park of new Dhankar Gompa. A signboard leads the starting point. Its a steep hike of around 45 Minutes after that one lands in a meadow like plain and the lake is situated just at the end of it surrounded by the high mountains. Its a completely desolated place. I was all alone when I visited the lake. Thrilled by its beauty and pristine nature. While hiking, the view of Dhankar village and gompa along with the confluence of Pin and Spiti rivers are just awesome. A must visit place in Dhankar. Carrying of water bottle and chewing gum helps in hiking.

Pristine lake..

This lake is at an offbeat location, around 2-3hours of steep trekking from the famous dhankar monastery.Even if the trek might drain your energy out,the moment you see the beautiful and clear lake lying on the lap of the mighty Himalayas you are bound to be rejuvenated. The lake is an ideal camping spot to stay at night if you like the idea of staying in tents and can tolerate the harsh weather. But the solitude it provides cannot be described in words with the lake reflecting the beautiful starry sky.The lake stays from for most part of the year and the ice starts to melt from the month of April.

Experience the untouched beauty of the high altitude lake
Sep 2017 • Friends
Up above the Dhankar village and Gompa and a steep 45 min walk lies the Dhankar Lake. A lot of people consider it an easy hike but the climb can make you breathless within a few seconds. For people who are not used to steep climbs, the hike to the lake can be physically challenging. But the view is rewarding for the ones who don’t give up. Suggest going slow and steady and not passing up the hike to this beautiful lake. The view from the lake is beautiful and you can even see far off mountains covered in snow. From here you can also get a wonderful view of Manirang Peak (6593 meters)– the highest peak of Himachal Pradesh lying on the border of Kinnaur and Spiti dirtrict.
