We stopped on Sunday morning and to our luck found the owner, Joe Bono, present and very welcoming. He gave us a tour and an extensive history of the jail and of Gleeson. He grew up in Gleeson and has an enormous amount of local anecdotes concerning the rise and demise of the copper mining industry which was the focal... More

see this place. While we were driving around just rubbernecking at the gorgeous scenery saw the turn off to this historic spot. It was closed when we got there but exterior is period and has a great story on the marker out front.

A great view of the mines, an old school house, old general store and the original tree they handcuffed prisoners to before the jail was built. Which is two cells and full of artifacts. Originally had a tin roof but the prisoners would push it up to escape. It is only open the first weekend of each month n has... More

Very beautiful. I takes to the grandson or great grandson of the land and he was nice enough to give me a lift in his ATV to show me the place. Be respectful people live here and they definitely had cases of vandalism and idiocy happen here.

We spend time in Tombstone and took a drive out to Gleeson to take a look at the ghost town - the jail was open when we were there and we had a lovely chat with the owner. He took us to what used to be the store and the saloon and showed us a mural. Lots of interesting stuff... More

Ton of local, historical information packed into the former jail house - curator super nice and informative. Make sure you catch it on the first Saturday of the month - worth a trip!

We went on a jeep tour and stopped here. it's very interesting but I'm not sure you can get in unless you are on a tour because our driver had a key and there was no one else there. The ghost towns we saw were barely there, foundations and some ruins. According to our tour guide, when the people left... More

Driving along the ghost town trail, we spotted the jail, but almost missed it. There are very few signs so you have to be on the lookout. All in all the ghost town trail was a disappointment. There weren't many buildings or remains and no markings. It is a nice drive into the dessert though and caught some need wild... More

We drove out looking for Rattlesnake Crafts & Rocks, which we got a flyer on in Tombstone. Don't look for the shop as the owners sold out and it's no longer in business. We found the restored Historic Gleeson Jail which was locked up tight. It was "okay", but not really worth the drive out. Perhaps if it was open... More
