It is hard for me to write this review, as I have visited for 20 years and took my entire wedding party here 8 years ago. On a good note, the property is beautiful and the guides are knowledgeable. The "flight of a Tuscan " zip line tour is fun and educational. On the other side I have watched the... More

The Eco Tram at Hacienda Barú lets you glide through the lush canopy of the coastal rainforest at your own pace and in solitary tranquility. You can stop and rotate to watch a butterfly, take a photo, or just to breathe and listen to the sound of rainforest richness. This was a special treat for me because my adventures are... More

I did not get a guide but I recommend one--kind of wish we had gotten one. We did not get one because this was the end of our trip and it was the most expensive guide we had come across (I think $30 or $40 per person?? and there were 6 of us). However, the path we took through the... More

Enjoyed the casual vibe here- not fancy- saw toucan, pecari, capuchins, wild turkey, sloth, etc. on the self-guided hikes on the trails on the refuge. Restaurant had comics tipica that was good- we had a troop of kids with us and the pool area and hammock areas were really great for hanging out!

Early morning we were the first to do the hike from the station to the Mirador path. We saw some wild pigs, monkeys and lizards. It was an easy walk - just going straight. Its near the road so sometimes you hear cars but still amazing to be in the jungle. The mirador circular path is more natural and exhausting.... More

Its such an abstract feeling seeing lots of animals in the jungle, while hearing cars pass by on the highway close to the trail. We learned to use it to our advantage. When we suspected that an animal was near, we only moved when a car passed by, so we wouldn't spook them. It worked. We took the trail behind... More

The walk (the one that we did at least) is completely flat, but some parts are wet or muddy (during rainy season), so bring good shoes. We spotted peccaries and agouties on the ground. This usually requires you to be completely quiet and stand still for several minutes to not scare them away. We also saw the white-faced cappuchin monkey,... More

I was here as a chaperone with 9 kids and our tour guide walked us through the grounds. We saw many local birds, animals, spiders and insects. Our kids liked the long lines of leaf cutter ants the most and a few brave kids tried a termite. There is also a cute visitor center and gift shop.

I spent 3 nights here after staying with a Costa Rican family for 3 weeks, and I really needed a bit of luxury. Hacienda Baru filled my need quite well. The room was clean and new and was constructed of beautiful yet renewable wood. The rooms have no AC, but there are ceiing fans and plenty of cross ventilation. It... More

Our family took the zip lining tour - absolutely fantastic and great for first time zip liners. The hike up through the forest was a unique learning experience. Our guides were very knowledgeable and were able to answer all of our questions regarding the chocolate trees (Cacao Trees), the difference between 2-toed and 3-toed sloths (besides the obvious), etc. The...
