This was amazing - a first lava field for us. There were bubbling lava pools, though you won't get too close to them. There are amazing walks through the lava fields and it is completely surreal, with steam billowing at your sides. The colours are...More

This area shows great effects of volcanic eruptions. Heard last erupted in 1984. There is a walk from the parking lot. Viti crater is in this area and is spectacular to see from the rim. We drove to see it in the morning but clouds...More

The lava fields are otherworldly and are an unmissable highlight of the area. The walk take around hour and half and takes in a unique lava field that is unlike anywhere else.

It's definitely worth visiting the Krafla Lava Fields if you're staying near or in Myvatn. The area has easy, fun and diverse hikes of about 1 hour which take you through different geological landscapes. Plenty of photo opportunities!

15 minute walk in which might be a problem for some. Was on a board walk though but not suitable beyond the start after that for strollers and the like. Some good views and moss covered rocks amongst the steaming lava.

A visit to the Krafla Lava Fields is something everyone who visits Iceland should do. This site is nothing but gorgeous with lava formation you have never seen and probably only see here. The sunset here was amazing too something worth checking out.

The answer for Iceland is all of the above. Plan for wind and rain, and also for sun. The weather really can change every 5 minutes. Light waterproof layers are the way to go. Don't miss the leirhnjukur lava field hike, it's... More
