The waterfall is not very impressive and we’ve seen taller, wider, nicer waterfalls. But we stopped anyway and took a hike to the summit. It’s a steep climb (mostly via steps) but the view from the top is amazing and made the whole stop worth it.

we loved staying at Hotel Magma, great accommodations and food on site! Make sure to enjoy a soak at the local pool with awesome views of Systrafoss from the hot tub. Great short hiking options nearby. A great place to stop and adventure if you are heading East.

There was only one of the twin falls with water so perhaps not quite as impressive as usual. Our tour bus stopped for a photo opportunity which is perhaps all you need.

We went there at the end of the day, under the rain, and still like that we found it beautiful to see.

Very nice falls within the town limits. Its free to visit and free to park. I would say the hike is fairly tough to go up and can be slippery if wet.

Go up, enjoy!

Hi guys
The top was to far for me.
It rained and the path was slippery.
It is a small foss.
Not worth a detour.

After settling in to Hotel Klauster we took a short walk to view the nearby waterfall called Systrafoss. We followed the red trail up through the woods towards the lake but as it approached the top it became increasingly rough and loose. My wife stayed where we she was whilst I completed the ascent and had a quick look at the lake at the top. It was a pleasant site but quite open. There were a few interpretative panels outlining some of its history. We walked back by the way we went up and returned to our hotel. It would have been good to have complete the 3.4 km round trip but for older legs it was rather too challenging. More agile, younger and fitter visitors would no doubt do the circuit with little difficulty.

While staying at the Hótel Klaustur in Kirkjubaejarklaustur, my daughter and I decided to take a late-day hike to Systrafoss.  There are multiple pathways around the waterfall and one that leads to the top.  It was a steep but short climb to the top. Steps and pathways made it easy to navigate.  On the day we climbed we experienced very high winds at the top.  There is a very scenic lake and more pathways around the lake.  We spent about 20 minutes at the top taking photographs.  Since the evening was clear, we could easily see the Vatnajökull ice cap.  Even though we climbed around 9:30 PM during the third week of May, there was plenty of light.  Overall, from the hotel to the top and back again took around 90 minutes.  If you are staying in town on your way to the Vatnajökull National Park, this is a nice before or after-dinner excursion.

The waterfall is not as impressive as other waterfalls in Iceland but the hike to the top and a quick and easy one and has some nice views of the area.

We were staying nearby, and after dinner, drove around some of the roads, and after seeing this 'lazy waterfall" from the road, came right by it. Not spectacular, but nice. We didn't hike to the top, as I'm old and semi-feeble.
We called it lazy because it took the path of least resistance, like I would have, and didn't have a dramatic drop. ALL the waterfalls are tremendous, each in their own way
