My husband and I experienced “The Cave People” just after New Year’s Day 2022 and I would highly recommend the experience. We were staying in a rather remote place near Thingvellir National Park where interesting, “geeky” educational experiences (which is what we like to do when traveling) were not something in great supply. Happily we learned about “The Cave People” and couldn’t have been happier that we did. Although the Google listing and the self-booking tool on the Cave People website noted that this enterprise was closed for the season, they offered multiple ways to reach out. I contacted them regarding the potential for a private tour for the following day and received a professional, polite, and complete reply from Smári (who was also the gentleman who led our tour) in mere minutes. We were offered two time slots and (thankfully!) apprised in advance that private tours are cash-only, which saved us from any embarrassment or delay upon arrival.

When we arrived the next morning (after the beautiful drive) to the Cave People’s site, we were greeted by our guide, Smári, in full period attire exactly as pictured on their website. Coming from a marketing background, whenever you receive exactly what you are shown, it builds immediate trust and makes me feel valued for my business.

We had a private tour of this most remarkable cave residence, made very relatable via expertly told (but no so much as to feel forced or overly rehearsed) the personal histories of Indriði Guðmundsson and Guðrún Kolbeinsdóttir, and Jón Þorvarðsson and Vigdís Helgadóttir, who lived in there. Without spoiling anything, the story-telling was great– replete with suspense, royalty, and Huldufólk (hidden people).

Smári gave a brilliant tour, slightly longer (happily so) than the 25 minutes promised on the website, and indulged us in all of our questions (of which we had more than a few). If you are interested in something off-the-beaten path, interesting, that is a departure from the all-too-expected snowmobiling/jeep/faux-adventure tours, I think you will thoroughly enjoy the Cave People as we did. Highly Recommended. Honestly, I do not have any constructive feedback for this most interesting and welcomed attraction that we were not expecting but so happy that we did discover.

The website said it was open with a 20min tour, but we were there and it was definitely not! We walked around and had a look through the windows. Shame but still impressive - looks just like a thatched cottage!

I'm so glad we stopped here. If you have time do this. It sets you back in time and make sure you do the tour so you can go inside.

An excellent peek into old times and old ways of living. (not that old though for us Icelanders). Hermann, the guide, was excellent and very knowledgeable about the history of the place and the geology of how the caves were formed. A great visit.

If you visit iceland, and drive along golden circle, make sure you pay a visit here. Not only you can see a man made cave but you will learn a lot about the history of the place. The cave itself is kept as close as possible to the condition it has been when in use to house people. It is an eye opening experience that vividly show the reality of olden days. Also, the guide, not sure his name, was an amazing guide, friendly and very knowledgeable

Memorable little historic site of a strange time in Icelandic history. The tour guide was great and the sheep were adorable. We had fun hearing out the history and taking in the landscape. Good stop if you want to spend an hour or so and good for kids.

Good guide telling stories about eg kings visiting the cave. A bit of a funny place. I liked it but the kids a bit bored. Nevertheless recommended to go there.

We came for a visit and were greeted by a friendly guide who showed us the cave and told us the story of the people that lived there more than hundred years ago. He was such a good storyteller that he made it sound like he was talking about his own family. Easy to locate and well worth the visit.

So sorry you came after closing time. Due to these strange times we had to cut opening hours, we are open 11-16 on weekdays and 11-17 on weekends. This information is on our website, facebook, google, and trip advisor. I´m afraid we had already printed and put out brochures saying we were open till 18 before covid. Those are hard to track down. hope you give us another chance next time you are in the area. best regards, Smári

Me and my friends highly recommend this tour! A bit offside but if only for the view worth it! Situated on a lonely mountainside lies the cave house. No big parking lot and no crowds of tourists if you fancy low key. The old stable converted into coffee shop was the coziest I’ve been to in years and Rajiv, our guide, made more out of the two small rooms that the caves consisted of than what you might first imagine. Incredibly knowledgeable and inspiring!
