Probably the most ornate and pretty church of all we visited. Churches/Cathedrals/Monastery visited before - Alcobaca, Tomar, & Batalha were grander but bare.

The church square outside, side streets and the Sao Goncalo bridge were all picturesque. We stayed in the area for an hour before continuing on to Guimaraes (from Monsanto).

The outside of the building and its position by the river and the famous bridge is superb. Inside is pretty. A beautiful organ. Gold alterpiece. Separate chapel where Sao Gonçalo is buried. We had to walk quite a long way to the site as parking is difficult

In the picturesque city of Amarante, in northern Portugal, the Monastery and Church of Saint Gonçalo is the main touristic and religious attraction. Built by Dominican monks between the 16th and the 17th Centuries, the complex lies on the side of a beautiful bridge - claimed to be built by the Saint himself on 1250 on the site of an old Roman bridge - over the Tâmega River, with blue and lazy waters. The church has an extremely rich collection of art masterpieces! Visit the cloisters, with beautiful arcades and impressive fountain, and don't miss the tomb of Saint Gonçalo by the main altar. Enjoy!

As such in so many cities in Portugal this is another beautiful one. Outside of the town being beautiful and charming the church is as well. Visit the church and walk the bridge as well. Such a beautiful place.

This is a stunning church both inside and out. As expected, the interior is lavishly decorated but the main feature has to be the stunning reredos with its intricate art work. I thought that the colourful marble columns were particularly beautiful.

I also liked the pulpit which, with its faux curtains at the rear, looks like a
box seating in a theatre. The anat-voix (sounding board) above the pulpit is also beautifully made.

And the final piece that caught my eye was the refreshingly modern marble lectern, which is a lovely, fresh looking piece of sculpture.

The striking St Goncalo's Church and Monastery anchors one end of the historic Ponte de Sao Goncalo. Construction of the present Church and Monastery began in 1543 and completed in 1620 on the site of a 13th century chapel.

We got the tip from our private driver - who took us to this catholic Sao Goncalo church in Amerante.
Sao Goncalo is the patron saint of singles (male and female!), lovers and sex.
So you are able to buy the instrument of Sao Goncalo in front of the church from some women, waiting for Visitors, who need his support!
We bought a couple of them - and had great stories to tell, whne we gave it away.... :-).

Lovingly preserved interior. Admission is free, like most churches in Portugal. Just off the main plaza, handy to our Hotel, Casa da Calcada, just across the Ponte de Sao Goncalo.

Six of us went for a countryside trip and we were lucky to be doing this on a weekday. There were 3 other people in the entire grounds of the church. So it was magical to be in these spaces on your own.

The courtyard at the rear is fantastic to walk around in; the beautiful stonework, overgrown with moss, vaulted gallery right around the courtyard, a lovely fountain, and is goes on...

Don't miss this beauty!

When you arrive in Amarante it will be difficult to find a spot to leave the car, and do not try to leave the car on any prohibited location, this because you easily can get a fine by the always walking around police. One of the most interesting things to visit here is the “São Gonçalo church / convent” located at the borders of the river. This church has his origins with a small and primitive building in the beginning of the XIII century. After woods the start of building a new temple and convent as it is now was given in 1543 and took until the XVIII century with still some interventions into the XX century. Not to believe when you see it today, very nice on the inside and simple on the outside, the entrance is free, and after your visit, take some time to see the bridge over the river, just in front of the church.
