One Sunday in January we visited Tantallon Castle and were very pleasantly surprised by the feel of the history in this castle. While it was "self lead" and we just wondered around and read the signs, it was truly a great castle to visit and would recommend it. We were fortunate that it was not crowded at all, only 4-6... Living nearby I have visited often - on my own with the dog, or with friends. There is a small car park near the shop and a larger car park at the entrance gates which involves a bit of a walk to the shop and ticket. There are toilets and a very good shop with quality gifts and souvenirs, books about... Interesting ruins of a castle with several floors you can access and feel the history with the cliff edge views a bonus and you can almost touch the Bass Rock, it is not far off-shore with its ruined chapel, prison and working lighthouse. The earthworks, ditches and ruined walls give a great impression of the fortifications of 600 years ago.

Visited here one afternoon as what we thought would be a way to spend an extra hour. A fascinating place, and our only regret is arriving so late. A massive structure full of history and really should be given ample time to look round. Stunning views of the sea in a really beautiful location. Will certainly be back with more... More

Another of Historic Scotland's well preserved ruined castles. Great walkways around the top of the ruins with beautiful views out to sea.

Tantallon Castle is a lovely, old ruin. It does look gorgeous going towards it but also being inside is great. You get lots of room and hidden spaces to see. Standing at the window and looking down to the cliffs with the waves breaking against the rocks was amazing. You can also reach the top of the castle and it... More

Located on the end of a small promontory and defended from the land by ditches and wall, this would have been a formidable castle to attack. It is surprisingly intact given its history of battle and exposed (but beautiful) location. Excellent information boards guide you as you explore the castle from dungeon to rampart.

Formidable stronghold on tops of cliffs a bit outside North Berwick. We had gorgeous weather when visiting and therefore had the opportunity to have a view of Bass Rock. Clear explanations and indications. We walked from the city centre to the castle. About 6 km.

Helpful attendant and notice boards helped bring this fascinating and well sited castle to life. Good benches for resting or a picnic and clean toilets.
