In the 1800s steamboats made Jacksonport a thriving river port. During the Civil War, the town was occupied by both Confederate and Union forces because of its crucial locale. Jacksonport became county seat in 1854, and constuction of a stately, two-story brick courthouse began in 1869. The town began to decline in the 1880s when bypassed by the railroad. The county seat was moved in 1891 to nearby Newport, and Jacksonport's stores, wharves and saloons soon vanished.Today, exhibits in the park's 1872 courthouse and programs by park interpreters share the story of this historic river port. Admission to the courthouse is free. The park offers 20 Class A campsites with water and electric hookups including 50 amp service at all sites, a swimming beach on the White River, standard pavilion, picnic sites, playground, and the Tunstall Riverwalk Trail to stroll alongside the river. The park is on Ark. 69 in Jacksonport (just three miles north of Newport).

We are on our Arkansas State Parks tour, and Jacksonport was the next on the list. It is is still considered off-season, so there was a lack of firewood stocked. Our Park Ranger was very courteous and knowledgeable, and we thoroughly enjoyed the view. It was a bonus to see a bald eagle in flight. There was plenty of green... More

Self guided tour of the lot but not access to the old building. Collection of historic bells and a memorial to those who fought in Confederacy. Pretty little place sort of in the middle of nowhere. Bonus: a/c restrooms!

Very nice park near banks of White River. Park staff at museum were informative. Museum has many documents, photos, and furnishings from years gone by.

We stayed a week camping and fishing in the park over the weekend of July fourth through the eighth. The camping spots are large and the river can be viewed from almost all the spots. The staff is very friendly and the bath house was kept very clean. We enjoyed the historical activities very much, and the presentation of the... More

We drove to Jacksonport State Park to see trees that were planted in memory of a family member. We also took time to run around, play on the playground and just enjoy the fresh air and family time.

We stopped at Jacksonport State Park on the drive down to Little Rock from Jonesboro. Nice State Park, not too far off the highway and easy to find, good stop to break up the drive. It was a gray day in January. There's an old courthouse, and some info on its significance, though there could be more. The park is... More

I am sure we barely touched the surface of what Jacksonport State Park has to offer, but it was a good "pull over" for us to stretch our legs during our summer road trip. We saw a small wedding taking place under the pavilion (over looks the "beach" and lake area), many campers set up on the camp site and... More

One of the stops on the Arkansas Civil War trail was the old port city of Jacksonport. During the war it was important to both Confederate and Federal forces and the site of the surrender of Confederate troops in the northern part of the state in 1865. I was under the impression that there were more buildings making up the... More
