We arrived and took a guide - which we would say is recommended as there aren't a lot of signs. Many locals, not many foreigners. The various Castle looking Buildings are very nice and not seen anything like this in Ethiopia. Our guide was very...More

No visit to Gondar is complete without paying respect to the Castles there. And that's what we did. Walking in the footsteps of history. Lucky us! What surprises me every time we visit is the sheer size of the castles. Castle building was started by...More

One of the many historical castles in Gonder and one of the reasons you came here. Take a guide when going around. Ethiopia has a very rich history which I was never aware of and the guide brought me quickly up to speed.

The real must in Gonder, built at same time as first Norman castles in UK. Well preserved and impressive castles. Not the scale of Rajasthan castles, but truly impressive.

Except a few buildings, most buildings in the complex are partially destroyed during the British bombing in the 40s. Very easy to walk around by yourself and you may not need a guide to tell you what you could probably know from the travel book.

Fasil Ghabbi or the castle of Gondar is a great complex of buildings representing the history of the city. Some of the buildings are well restored, others only have walls and ruins. The complex offers knowledgeable guides.

This was okay to my opinion. The trouble was, as sometimes is the case, too many tourists in one place. Nice buildings and history good to see. But at a certain moment I got an information overload of the whole Fasilides family and their property.
