If you are looking for the "famous" Dragon Crest Trail - it is here at this park. The park opens technically at 8am, but we hit the trail at 7am - which you will be thankful to do! At the ranger hut, you will sign into the log book, and when you return, you will pay them the trail fee (cash only). The heat was NO JOKE! We should have gone at 6am, but 7am wasn't terrible. It took almost 2 hours up, but we did a lot of side trails and dawdling to take in the views. Be advised, this is NOT a "Nature Trail", this is definitely a Class 2 hike, with some sections being a Class 3 where you need to use your hands to scramble. I do NOT recommend bringing kids on this trail either, but each family knows their youngsters so some might be okay. Do not wear sandals, bring a ton of bug spray and water. There's nothing on the trail up or down. If you are looking for the IG famous "spot", after you scramble the boulders at the top, stick to the right and you'll eventually run into it. The area is fenced off with barb wire, and there is a fine if you are caught on the other side of the fence. Cell service is available up there. The views were those "once in a lifetime" for sure. I loved every minute of being on the trail, and would do it again. At the bottom of the trail, there is a small snack shack where you can buy some delicious ice cream and cold water.

One tough hike - but so worth it! We set off at 10am expecting it to take 2 hours….3.5 hours later we got back down 🤣 We took 2 litres of water between the two of us and ran out half way down. Some quite technical climbing parts in places - you need to be pretty fit and nimble and certainly don’t try it in flip flops… A great way to see the nature of this part of Thailand - thoroughly recommended!

Because of all the reviews we were not sure what to expect. We (fit couple of 47 and 50 years) walked up in 1.5 hours. Yes, you walk on clay, on (large) stones, on stairs, on tree stumps, but it was fine for us. It is not a Dutch forest with flat paths. But if you can walk well uphill, you can handle this hike just fine. Plenty of water is useful. Have fun!

Dragon Crest Mountain (Khao Ngon Nak) Viewpoint is perfect for tropical adventurers & great for nature photography. It's Located in Nong Thale (30km northwest of Krabi Town & 18 km north of Ao Nang ), finding the departure point of the trail is not easy so it is recommended to catch a guide or a local driver. The trail begins with a small map at the entrance to introduce the general area and brief information about the trail and you can park your motorbike there. 3.7 Kilometers long Trail to the summit is nestled amongst the jungle. It takes about 2.5 hours to reach the highest viewpoint (565m asl). The climb is not very difficult. Along the way, hikers encounter a stream, two viewpoints, a waterfall, and last the panoramic summit. The trail to the summit is inconspicuous & a local’s secret hideout, so it's better to go there in the day light and because of krabi's tropical weather, it's better to start the trail early in the morning. You may have some difficulties to reach the peak but when you get to the summit, you will see spectacular view and you will attain superb feelings over there. Don’t hesitate! Hit the Summit.

This is definitely NOT a stroll in the park, it’s a challenging hike up a Rocky Mountain track in possibly tropical conditions depending on time of year.
You will definitely need decent training shoes or better still hiking boots unlike some of the people I passed in flip flops!!!
Take plenty of water (at least 2 Ltr),sun cream, insect repellent and possibly a sugar snack as you will definitely be sweating!!!
All that said, after around 2 hours you should reach it’s peak you will definitely be rewarded with spectacular views.
Unfortunately it’s the descent after that and in my opinion a tougher walk back down than up but a great adventure if like me you get bored of sitting around a pool or beach.
Cost is 300 Bhat which seems to be normal for entering a National park.
Please don’t attempt this if you are not fairly fit, you have been warned 😂😂

The views at the top are fantastic, definitely worth the effort. The way to the top though is very tough. You see all types of individuals in different physical shapes that either gave up or turned back around. This place can really get the best put of you. Make sure to bring plenty of water!!

So I dont do many reviews any more but thought I would do a full explanation as these are answers I wanted before I did the trip.
First of what do you need to take? I would suggest 2L of water, bug spray, a change of clothes, some snacks and also something to wipe your face with whilst hiking. You NEED good grip on your shoes preferably hiking shoes but definately not sandals, thongs, flip flops or anything similar.
Secondly getting there... I just found a taxi/tour guy in Krabi and asked how much to take me there for the morning, I paid 1500B but I didnt haggle after a day of travelling so I am sure you can get it closer to 1000B.
The journey takes around 40 mins from Krabi, we set off at 6:50 and I started the hike at 7:30.
It is free to do the hike although there is a tip box which I did tip because they have clean toilets to use for free, also they have a sign in and out book which you have to do.
I got to the viewpoint just before 9am so it took me just under 1.5 hours and I consider myself not too fit and having bad stamina. I stopped maybe 4/5 times for 30 seconds to a minuite to have a drink and wipe my face but I was very determined.
So you are looking at 1-2 hours to get to the top I would say, 1 hour if you are very fit and a hiker 2 hours if you consider yourself unfit or need to take many breaks, regardless keep going.
The first 1km or so is pretty steep and very uneven rocks so be careful with your ankles, when you reach the second set of wooden stairs with the wooden bench at the top you are half way. You will then head up and over a peak and then it will start to flatten out and go down slightly before the last 1km which is very steep too, borderline climbing not hiking and the last bit right before the viewpoint where you get the amazing shot is actually climbing up some rocks.
I would say anyone older with joint issues or any medical conditions take the whole trip easy, take your time and be careful as some parts are slippery.
Once you get to the top you will see a viewpoint and a wooden bench if you then walk past that you get to the rocks which you have to climb up and around to the right you will eventually get to the viewpoint from all the pictures which has a rope to help you get down to be safe. The person taking the pictures needs to walk another minuite or so around to the left following the paths.
Be VERY careful coming down as all those points you thought were steep going up are very much so going back down and I slipped 3/4 times on the rock bit right near the end luckily I was agile enough to grab something in time or land on my hands but for someone less agile or maybe older it could of been a bad fall onto the rocks.
Overall just take your time especially so coming back down, it is 100% worth all the effort though.

Sister and I went to Krabi over the weekend (March 2019) and had nothing planned for the second day. (we went there 3d2n). So we decided to hike. Stayed in Krabi town and got a taxi from there. Read blogs where they said to hire a tuktuk for about 1200baht. We managed to get an air-conditioned car (taxi for hire) for 1300baht (to and fro) and its about 40mins drive from Krabi town. Make sure you get transport to and fro because its safer and convenient that way. Not sure if you can get a taxi back to town. We only took 1hr 45mins up, and 1hr 20mins down. Just remember to register with the rangers before you start. No entrance fee. Trail is very very well kept. You won't get lost. There are direction signs along the way. Wear proper shoes! Bring at least 1000ml water per person and some light snacks. Once you reach the top, you'll know. Its definitely a different view from above and its worth it! Spend a little time up there, enjoy the Sun and breeze. It can get a little crowded if you start hiking at 10am. We were lucky as it wasn't THAT crowded (about 15-20 people). If you hike alone, just ask some kind "photographers" to help you take pics (when you're there, you'll know what I mean ;) ) Also, download the app "MAPS.ME". It doesn't require internet, only uses your GPS. Make sure to download the Thailand map beforehand and you're all set to go. Hope this review helps!

At first we were afraid that it would be raining on the day of our hike, but luckily it drizzled just a lil bit early in the morning and stopped. The path was still a lil bit slippery, luckily we had proper shoes on. We took our time, slowly and steadily up the mountain. Its challenging but doable, if you have played sports before or workout/run quite often, give it a go! Dont be intimidated. But being south east asians, we are used to humid weather. So for non SEAsians, take that into account as well as the air was definitely humid. The path is not paved, and it is filled with lots of rocks, roots, soil that you have to manouver around. We took 3-4 quick rests on the way up. It took us slightly under 2 hours to reach the peak. It was an amazing feeling! Its very very beautiful. The view was worth it!
Things to note:
1. Wear proper shoes and long pants/tights if you do not want to get scratched by branches and twigs. My friend wore teva sandals, it has a good grip but she had several scratches, but she said it was tolerable. So its up to you.
2. Bring lots of water, at least 1-1.5 litres, bring snacks too.
3. Take lots of rests and dont force yourself
4. There is only one obvious path up, and one path down, i believe its possible to explore this mountain on your own. If you are afraid, start your hike around 8-8.30am as there will be more people along the path.
5. It is definitely NOT suitable for those who have knee problems as the path down would put a lot of pressure on your knees.
6. The hike would take around 4 to 5 hours if you take a lot of pictures.

Tough ascend with reward at the top. You should start early when the temperature is relatively low and most of the path is in the shadow. 1,5 liter drinking water per person is a must!

Is the hike OK for a 4yo eager to walk?
Written 27 December 2019
Well
To be honest I would say no.That said I did see some children walking up there. There are some really tough spots up there,of which little legs might struggle. Also if you are thinking of taking the little one, make sure he has proper shoes.Hope this helps.

hi. we are thinking to go here tomorrow ! just wondered what is the path actually comprised of? is it forest floor path, or is it all steps, or is it all climbing up rocks etc. we did the 1237 steep steps to tiger cave temple and don't want to do something again that's just soley steps or completely steep the whole way
Written 27 January 2019
It is rough terrain, quite long stretches over small boulders, uphill over tree roots. Some parts are very steep. There are steps up some of the steep part. The last part is clambering over large rocks, which is where we gave up. It is a fairly strenuous walk, so it depends how young and fit you are!!

Can we go at anytime? I was thinking of going for sunset?

Hello guys !
I wish to hike Ngon Nak Mountain in August. Is it possible to hike solo ? Any recommendations for mountain guide. Will be great to have their Facebook or emails perhaps . Thank you in advance!
Written 28 June 2018
Please check the weather and avoid at all costs if its rainy because the trek is slippery at many spots. hiking solo is not a problem at all, it is a very short trek. do not forget to carry a few energy bars and a bottle of water as there is no provision of both at anywhere throughout the trek and also no such provisions at the top. A guide is not required at all as you will find many travellers coming back while you go up, they will provide ample guidance and cheer. Any communication with the park authority over facebook or email is not required at all. it is a very short trek but a bit demanding physically.

We are actually staying on Ko Phi Phi Don island. I've read that the taxis cant make it to trail head is this correct? Including ferry trip to the Krabi dock how long of a trip and hike with this be. What is elevation gain? We usually hike the white mtns in the U.S. Only about 4-5 thousand foot elevation gain and very steep rocky footing.
Written 8 April 2018
How could i get there if staying in Phuket or Phi Phi island? Do any of the boats dock by here?
Written 7 April 2018
Hi, the best option would be to take a ferry (from Phuket or Phi Phi) to Krabi dock and take a taxi from there - ferry is like 400 baht and taxi should be 500-700. If they offer higher prizes (what they probably would try, be tough and negotiate).
Or if you can drive a motorbike, renting one is the smartest option.
Another thing is, it would be better if you have a stay somewhere there because it might be tough to do it like a roundabout trip.
