It is a typical Roman temple--so interesting to see it in the middle of a mostly Nabatean site. You can walk around the whole thing, and check out the fallen columns. We stopped up to check it out on our way back from the Monastery.

The architecture of Temple shows how much people at that time had faith and how much effort they put into building these temples. Watching them from little far is good as you can capture them clearly.

This temple is right by the basin restaurant. We visited from the monastery side of Petra. We saw the temple from the outside but it was closed off to enter. They had recently excavated steps and we found out 75% of petra is still underground....More

The Great Temple is one of the major archaeological monuments in Petra. Covers 7000 square meters including the north and south of the monument entryway. Today historians believe this might have been the seat of government.

but don't. Turn left just by the remains of the triumphal arch, and go up the steps. You won't be disappointed.

Contrary to what its name implies, this complex is not believed to have primarily served a religious function, but rather, as a civic complex under the patronage of the Nabatean royal house.

Just looking at the pillars of the Great Temple would make you think and wonder about what a sight the temple must have been in its heyday. Today, it's a large space with pillars all around undergoing restoration but it's certainly worth a visit on...More
