Great views, many different types of landscape. We took the Me-akan-Onsen trail in both directions. It's not an easy hike, wether uphill or downhill. Almost 900 meters in height on just about 3.5 km trail (one way). But the effort pays out.

If you enjoy hiking on active volcanoes, as I do, you'll love this day hike. There was no access restriction due to volcanic activity as the last review indicated. It's a steep ascent up to the crater rim where there are good views into the steaming, fuming calderas as well as the surrounding region including Lake Akan and the town... More

Due to increased signs of volcanic activity hikers are presently not permitted to walk to the crater of Meakan-dake (mid-August 2015). Before planning your trip check the alert level on the website of the Japan Meteorological Agency and / or ask the locals. A route that brings you close to Meakan-dake without getting close to the crater leads up the... More

I can't see anywhere to review Oakandake, so I'm putting my review here. We had an amazing hike up this monster of a volcano but it was hard work and took us (two 40 somethings and an 11 year old) 4 hours to reach the summit, much longer than the guide suggested. The trailhead is a short drive from Akanko... More

This is one of the best hikes for volcano lovers - not only for them! Meakan-dake climb will take you about 4 to 5 hours, and is amazingly diverse: you start in an old pine forest and feel like a hobbit among huge roots of trees, then climb through the low bushes and arrive in bare land to the vast... We did this hike based on the Lonely Planet description of this as an easy hike. We have done hikes all over the world and I would not describe this as easy or for novices. The trail is well marked, but not maintained at all. In many sections your climbing up large tangles of tree roots or rocks. The footing... More

There are 3 routes going to the top of the volcano. The easiest starts at Meakan-Spa (17 km from Akan-Ko, south west). The path starts hundred meters before the parking, left on the road. There are then some signs which say to take care in case of earthquake, and not to panic :-) The way to the top passes in... More

This is a fantastic hike. We were lucky with such a clear day to enjoy. Start at Meakan Onsen and do the round trip. Almost 2 hours to the summit. A little longer to descend via a circuit and then a few kms past the lake and via road to return back to the carpark. Photos don't do it justice!... More

Well, it did! We couldn't bend our knees after this hike, and he was groaning for most of the next day when not just out of the onsen. Tip: Don't go up if its a cloudy day. Without the views, it's hard to make this worth it - we comforted ourselves with the fact that we did it in the... More

Just in 2 hours you climb to real volcanic crater - with a steaming landscape and awesome views. 20 minutes drive from Akan Onsen/Lake, the touristy village - it's signposted to Onneto lake off the road to Obihiro. The approach through the forest is beautiful. Comihg by bus from Akan Onsen (5 a day) you get off at Meakan Onsen... More
