Being the 2nd largest City just after Sapporo, a trip here is a must.
We took the JR Harumi timed at 9am and reached promptly after 1 hr 25 mins of Rapid Service. First impression is the modern spacious area, spanking clean against the woody theme. Not too many passenger traffic (unlike Hakata, Osaka, Kyoto etc) which meant a slower pace for us to chill!
Apart from its spanking new interior, the station complex boasts various facilities such as a post office, souvenir shops, a tourist information center and even art galleries (yes)
We dropped by the Tourism and Local Products Information Center located near the south exit. We asked for more specific directions and they were prompt and helpful. There is even a shopping area beside with local specialty. Wifey even bought at 9000 Yen Ainu-themed bag! There is also an entire rack of brochures and information dedicated to travel in Asahikawa and the whole of Hokkaido
The station connects direct to the main shopping street, Heiwa Shopping Street at one side and the AEON mall is within it. Shopping and meals are thus non-issue. We spent some time moving round the large but not fully occupied station, there are Local furniture's of bench, tables & chairs available for resting.
On the southern side it is faced with a mid-size nature (of trees and the Kagami pond). We walked from this side to the Asahikawa City Museum.
Love this station, will come again in our next Hokkaido trip.

This station has improved greatly in recent years. There is now a proper bus terminal out front and you can walk straight into Aeon.
Bonus points for having adequate seating. This is sorely lacking in pretty much every Japanese train station, but Asahikawa has done well.
The information center is great now. Well worth a visit for travellers.
The only downside is (like many train stations in Japan) there are no bins around. You'll have to take any rubbish over to Aeon.

The station is huge and directly connected to Aeon shopping center. Lots of locker / storage area and the place is convenient and clean. The design of this station is stylish with some artwork placed in the center of the station too. The scenic outside of the station at the back was amazing too.

A nice train station, very clean and modern, with nice bathrooms and good shopping options. It is also attached to a mall and a hotel. It has a lovely park right out front for walking or jogging, and the workers are friendly and helpful.

The station was designed by an architect, Hiroshi Naito. Not unique and remarkable but design done well as a facility for public. Garden in front of the station is nice and retail shops and restaurant also nice.

Once the train elegantly slides into the platform of Asashikawa station, I bet most of you probably can't wait to get out of the train and make a beeline for the zoo shuttle bus. Well, that can wait, because you are going to pause and marvel at everything the minute you start descending the stairs: From the handrails to walls, nearly everything visible is made of wood, beautifully crafted Japanese-style wood. The space in in front of the ticketing booths is massive, with multiple wooden benches. There is also an in-station gallery I believe, but it's close on Monday? A small restaurant is attached inside the visitor center where info and local delicacies are both available. The restaurant also offers ready-made food (mostly sushi and noodles). If you're not hungry or don't feel like spending money inside the zoo, remember to bag some before hopping on the bus. You think that's it? Absolutely not. A giant, modern mall is patched seamlessly with the station exit. Anything you need to feed the hungry stomach and restock your shopping bag, you can get it here. We didn't plan to enter the mall in the first place; but somehow, we missed the express train back to Sapporo. So we wound up having dinner in the food court and spent some quality time there.

The station staffs are very friendly and jovial. They are very helpful and reply with a smile. Though not all the staffs speaks English, one can manage communication here.
There is AEON mall here and other restaurants and shopping places here adjacent to the station.
One of my favorite station it is.

Just like the other train station in Japan which is very well designed for a customer convenience. You can find omiyage/souvenir shop of Asahikawa goods on the first floor. There is a connecting door into aeon mall which you can find a variety of foods on the first-floor food court and supermarket.

A tourist-friendly train station where you can find a tourist information centre with a souvenir shop, a post office, luggage storage lockers and convenient shops. Signs around the station are in English. There are elevators in the station so there's nothing to worry if you're lugging your heavy suitcases around. There's also a mall which is directly connected to the station where you can do some shopping for interesting souvenirs. Train personnels are friendly and helpful. Ask around if you're not sure of your directions!
