We did the circular Greenhead/Thirlwall Castle walk on a cold, wet and windy day in February. We walked along by Hadrian's Wall, then crossed a bridge where there were some pretty cottages by the stream.. Then there is a bit of a climb to get to the castle. It was an interesting place to stop and have a quick look... More

We were walking Hadrian's Wall and the path goes right past Thirlwall Castle. It was a very nice little rest stop to get off the path and kind of wander around. There isn't much to see. It is mostly old walls and well kept lawns. Unless you're going to have a picnic here, plan on a fairly short visit (15... More

The castle or actually the old residence is now just a large ruins that is of only limited historical interest. Pictuesque and in a pastoral setting along Hadrians Wall, the stones of which were used in construction.

Staying in the area this was on our to do list. After parking up you follow the route outlined by the sign in the carpark, a ten minute walk takes you to the castle. It's in a ruinous condition so entry is free, cross the river using the bridge for another little walk and more views of the castle.

Nice to pop in, it is free entry, on a walk along Hadrians wall area. There is very little left of the castle but some nice opportunities for photographers and interesting history.

Theres not much to see, just a few ruins situated next to a farm. If you're walking past then its ok for a browse around but its not worth a detour.

Basically a ruined and very small castle. Interesting as an adjunct to a Hadrians wall trip because you pass right by and it's made of stone self evidently taken from the wall. But as a separate attraction in its own right, it underwhelms. Do have a look if your passing as it's worth the 50m climb but don't bother if... More

The impressive Thirlwall Castle ruins well worth a visit - and it was just on our doorstep as we stayed in the Holmhead camping barn below it!
