Downtown Berkeley should be an embarrassment both to the city and the university. Boarded up shops, scores of street people sleeping on the sidewalk and trash everywhere. The bloom is off the rose in this college town and it's hard to see how the university...More

Things have changed a lot since I was an undergraduate. Some notable restaurants are Great China, Comal, Five.

Seems to represent Berkeley, with interesting shops to browse, good eating options and very lively. Anyone visiting Berkeley has to explore Shattuck Avenue to really know the city.

A kicky place to do some cruising down the sidewalk looking for food and gawking at all the freaks. Oy.

Driving from one end to the other reinforced the point that in many parts Berkeley is quite ordinary. It is only in a relatively short section in downtown that the street impresses with an interesting quirky charm.

After exiting Downtown Berkeley BART subway system you will be on Shattuck Avenue with a delightful 1/2 day ahead of you. Walk south on one side of the street and sight see the "only in Berkeley" cast of characters playing music, preaching, or just hanging...More

We enjoyed walking up and down the street. It's easy to get to the BART. There were numerous restaurants and quirky shops to stop in.

After a few days in S.F., we breathed a sigh of relief to be in Berkeley. It is true there were less homeless and mentally ill people, but as well, there wasn't as much hyper pricing, either. Things were pretty much as we left them...More

Lots of inexpensive ethnic restaurants, many aimed at the student crowd. Some bookstores and a few interesting shops. Some movie theaters and a couple of major performance theaters are nearby. Lots of food traffic. Transit hubs. Too many street people, especially young drifters.
