This town/museum/archaeological excavation started out as a small fishing village pre-Jesus and has been an important religious destination for centuries. There are two ancient synagogues here, one built on top of the other (and two of the oldest synagogues in the world), and a house that supposedly belonged to Peter. When you walk down the streets here, you get a very real feel for the history and power of the place, no matter your personal religious beliefs.

This small town on the shores of the Sea of Galilee holds much to be seen. Walk its historical streets and learn the early life story of Jesus.

Situated on the Sea of Galilee, this small ancient fishing village (Kfar Nahum), was also centrally located on the main road linking Egypt to Damascus. Most noteworthy, however; Capernaum has become known as the town where Jesus of Nazareth later resided, calling His apostles into action and performing miracles here and in the nearby vicinity. There are numerous New Testament Bible references to Capernaum, and visiting the ruins, walking its streets where Jesus walked nearly 2 thousand years ago, is a key component to fulfilling the Christian Pilgrimage. Walls and flooring from the original, 1st century Jewish Synagogue where Jesus preached, are exposed in a corner section of the currently standing 4th century Byzantine structure. This later synagogue has numerous columns and stone bench seating area along the interior walls. A modern church, elevated upon pillars, has been built above the archeological remains of the home of St. Peter, with a glass floor to view the home's remains below. Enjoy your meaningful walk through history and the Bible, while visiting ancient Capernaum!

Jesus's hometown. While Jesus grew up in Nazareth, his hometown during his ministry was Capernaum. Amazing to see the house under the church & the synagogue. The 4th century temple is what is standing but you can see they built on top of the 1st century synagogue that Jesus would have taught in.

The futuristic church can be skipped, but it sits on top of the ruins of an ancient town. The most interesting part of this site is the old synagogue, which probably sits on top of another old synagogue where Jesus would've attended or preached. The old synagogue has some well-preserved carvings and details that take a few minutes to spot.

Continually under construction in an area which has been promised Government money but which has yet to be seen in any quantity. So much that Jesus did in and around this location on the banks of the sea of Galilee.

There is so much to see and take in here. Peter's mother-in-law's house and the temple are the main attractions but there is so much to view and think about while walking down the streets of the town. I think you could go in quickly and enjoy but lingering will be the better experience.

This was the town that Jesus based out of in his Galilean ministry. They have found some good relics and they have the synagogue partially reconstructed that Jesus would have been in during His time here on earth. Peter's mother-in-law's house is more than likely one of the houses in the complex.
