It's hard to describe this place in a few sentences because it's so diverse. We spent a couple hours and walked about a mile and we've experience fog and clouds, burning sun, shady creek with calla lilies, ocean sand beach, ocean rocks, crystal clear fresh water creek, all kinds of blooming wild flowers - it's really overwhelming. One of the... More

Garrapata State Park is an iconic spot to capture the feel of the Big Sur Coast. The key to getting killer shots is to hit the area at the right time, with the right cloud formations. While everybody loves a “bluebird” day, the best photos come from a sky filled with puffy clouds or even better a breaking storm. Clouds... More

This place is beautiful. There are lots of paths to explore. There is a fee to get into the park [$10 I believe] but it is well worth the money. The roads [dirt] are nice and wide and there are plenty of places to stop and hike. There are also tide pools in one location but you have to get... More

We specifically went here for sunset, as the location faces due west. Take the trail down across the bridge for a look at the waterfall. This is an easily accessible and spectacular place.

We spent a full morning photographing this beach, great surf to watch and great views. Watch the undertow if you plan to swim there.

Garrapata is open while 95% of Big Sur is closed due to flooding, mud slides and 2016 wild fires. We spent two nights watching the sunset from the bluffs at Garrapata and it was amazing. There is a beach there as well that isn't the easiest to access, but well worth walking if you can make it happen. The bluffs... More

We visited the Garrapata State Park on our tour of Big Sur, after Los Lobos State Park. While Los Lobos was teeming with people and seemed a bit more cheery, Garrapata was quieter and seemed more austere and intense. The jagged cliff edges were repeatedly beaten by big waves. There are rock formations in the water that remind a bit... More

Beautiful bluff hike with gorgeous ocean views and a surprise field of Calla lilies along the creek certain times of the year.

Prepare yourself for breathtaking views of jagged cliffs and the native coastal flora. We came here on a whim when we had some time to kill before checking into our cottage in Carmel. We were pleasantly surprised by how well-kept all the trails are.
