It only comes out at few places (on the beach and also above it). Definitely interesting thing to see, but not a "must see". If you like walking, you can park on a free parking lot at Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and the trail gets...More

As a teenager, Tarpits was our stomping grounds! This was well before the state developed this section into camp grounds. Through the years there has been a lot of erosion, I'd say a good 10-15 feet. A great place to surf. At low tide there...More

We've always wanted to find this beach. Parked at the trail head near the freeway offramp and had to walk about a mile each way. Not easy to access since there is a cliff. Had to climb down. Maybe it's accessible from the campground. If...More

I've never been to La Brea, but I've that it actually has pits full of tar. Carpinteria isn't quite like that. Instead of massive lakes, it's dried tar rocks, occasional tar springs, and occasional streams of tar you find here. They're nothing mind-blowing, but the...More

Wife and I visited here during our stay in the area. The city of Carpinteria is very nice, has a beautiful downtown area. Wish we could have been here for the Farmer's Market. Tar Pits Park was a nive place to visit.

Walked through the park this morning, lots of area is roped off with signs indicating Off Limits. There are a few places where you can see the hardened tar, but mostly this area is just st a walkway to another destination.

The closest parking is in the Carpinteria State Beach, with $10 parking fees for cars. You will walk a little ways along a beach trail before you get to Tar Pits Park. The views are beautiful, but if you're coming to see lots of oozing...More
