Based on what I was told during my visit, the algae problem is bad only in August-September. That said, it has been an extended hot & dry season in CA this year as you know. If you call some of the local businesses (hotels for example), ask them directly about the algae growth and the algae stench *right now*. The smell of the algae is apparently intolerable when active. I was there in the spring and could see bright green residue on the edges of the water, no smell at all, but we did pick up skin infections (deep red itchy bumps) from going in the water. I read an article just now from 9/17/2016 from East Bay and it was horrible this year. You're smart to check this out thoroughly before you go.
