We went into the church, not really knowing what we expected, and was greeted by the nicest man in our own language (Danish). He clearly knew everything about the history of the church, and was eager to tell us about it. We would recommend this...More

We went here to see the cathedral and the university. It is an interesting place in the middle of nowhere, but well worth a visit.

This campsite in the Holar forest next to the cathedral is to die for. It does not offer electricity and is not very large but very secluded and quiet. The bathrooms are nice and this place it not pricey. It is close to many attractions...More

It was here that the bishop of Northern Island resided until 1801. A fine solemn church with an impressing church tower. Don´t miss the reconstruction of wooden house. Now there´s a farmer´s school here.

Holar is a small town, but packed with lots of interesting things to see. The town was the ecumenical capital of Northern Iceland until the reformation with the cathedral being the oldest stone church in Iceland. The interior is full of interesting art objects, with...More

The journey to, and the setting of, the Church is stunning. Sadly the Church is now closed for the winter, as is the information office in Holar. Outside the Church is a notice claiming that it is open EVERY day 10.00 until 18.00. The information...More

If you have the time, this historic little village is worth a detour. Holar Cathedral with surrounding cemetery and grounds is a very photogenic spot. Nice views from the Bell Tower top, but it’s not super high. The cathedral site is 1,000 years old, but...More

This is a cathedral. But in an Ísland scale. A small church in a very peaceful surroundings. The guide for the day was a retired priest, the Bishops husband, and a very nice man. He had very good knowledge of the history of Christianity in...More

Out of the way but worth the drive. Attractive cathedral and bell tower. The lady inside the cathedral was really nice and made the trip worthwhile. A very rainy day didn't spoil this historically important place.
