From the Madding Crowd! Here is a little bit of old Venice with commercial fishing boats and a working waterfront. A long embankment facing the Adriatic atop a 12 foot high seawall built up in stages (over the centuries?) provides great walking and jogging opps with views to the other side of the Venetian lagoon.

We visited the island on a warm Saturday afternoon at the end of January, taking the No. 11 bus (I think that's the number) to its southern end and then walking halfway back and then catching a bus back to the ferry and Lido. It was very interesting to see the seawall and the small, brightly painted homes, many of... More

We were staying on Lido, and saw photos of Pellestrina. Otherwise, we would have missed out! We caught the number 11 bus from Santa Maria Elisabetta - the same place the vaporetti stop. The journey is about 40 minutes,m and includes a short hop by vehicle ferry. We had 72-hour tickets that covered all of this, as well as vaporetti.... More

Pellestrina is just an hour (by Vaporetto and then a bus ride which includes a ferry ride) from central Venice, but seems like a world apart: it's a long and very narrow (100 m) fishermen's island with colorful houses, wild beaches and few restaurnts. If you have more than two three days in Venice this may be a refreshing option.

One hour away from the turistic stampede of San Marco, Rialto, aso, take bus line 12 in Lido. 50 minutes later, you are in another world after having seen various sides of the laguna (and taken a ferry with the bus to cross the Malamocco entrance to the laguna. No Chinese-made carnival masks, no fake Murano glasses... Just a quiet... More

You can reach it by vaporetto from Chioggia or the Lido, where you take the bus and a ferry to reach this characteristic area. Not only can you swim on the Adriatic side but you can eat well in various of the restaurants there. As it is well known for mussels try them, they are tasty and fresh. An even... More
