Founded in 1771 in a remote valley, the Mission San Antonio de Padua is an elegant place to understand the history and architecture of California missions. Remote and hidden for years on land owned by William Randolph Hearst and then a military base, Mission San...More

The retrofit project was in full swing during our brief visit but we still enjoyed seeing the exhibits and chatting with the woman running the gift shop. The most off-the-beaten-track of the 21 missions, Mission San Antonio de Padua sits in the middle of the...More

The mission is the best preserved CA mission site with many actual ruins of original structures on the premises. It is being rehabilitated so be sure to approach all the wings to see painted archways, etc. The drive there is also beautiful. We were coming...More

This Mission is off of the beaten path. You have to drive through a military base. We took several U turns before we found it. Great setting and surroundings.

This is one of my favorite missions. The artwork is beautiful, the chapel is gorgeous and best of all are the 2 mission cats Rosario and Spirit. Rosario is the black cat, make sure you ask about his story (no spoilers here!)

This is one of our favorites, actually it is my favorite. It is a little difficult to get to, but worth it. It is in the middle of a Military reservation, off of Jolon road.

I really loved this mission but it was hard to find my way in and hard to find my way back out. This is the least restored mission as it is not near any populated area, but was quite lovely and worth the visit. The...More

Located outside the Fort Hunter Liggett army base, easy to find. They remain open during renovations, still interesting even without the docent-led tour. Very well maintained, the church still has mass once a week, and the murals are something to see. There are signs around...More

You'll get your California Mission merit badge for visiting this mission. It's 26 miles off of U.S. 101. It's quiet, has some interesting features like the threshing floor that you just can't see at other missions. Since you've got to be a little intrepid just...More
