The watershed consists of 19,300 acres of protected lands surrounding the Los Vaqueros Reservoir, which holds 160,000 acre-feet of stored drinking water. An expansion of the reservoir took place in 2011 & 2012. The reservoir expended from a maximum capacity of 100,000 acre-feet to 160,000 acre-feet. Recreational facilities at the South Entrance were relocated to higher ground. The project enables the Water District to pump high quality water from Old River in the Delta during wet months when salinity is low, then store it for use in the fall, when the Delta water quality is poor. The water is pumped from the Old River intake, then transported through several miles of pipeline to the reservoir, where it is stored.

The project's primary purpose is to improve drinking water quality for 450,000 customers and the watershed is open to the public for recreation year round.

The watershed offers fishing, a boat rental marina, courtesy fishing docks, hiking and multi-use trails, picnic facilities, restrooms and three staging areas.

Los Vaqueros is a protected watershed environment that provides people with drinking water and numerous protected animal and plant species with a place to live. Because the reservoir stores drinking water, body contact sports (such as swimming) and personal watercraft are not allowed. Dogs are not allowed at Los Vaqueros Reservoir. Smoking is allowed only in designated smoking areas. Possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages is not allowed at Los Vaqueros Reservoir.

For hiking this place is great, just don't visit when it is over 85 if you expect to hike because there is very little shade. They have a nice little store that keeps the drinks cold.

Visited Los Vaqueros reservoir to get the lay of the land and practice run the Tarantula Run 10k race that is happening there in October. It is September now and all the hills are dry with occasional coastal Oak trees. We started at Kellogg creek picnic area which has restroom facilities and shaded picnic tables. Various trails branch off from... More

Gorgeous views, but most of the visitors were there for the fishing. Nice hiking trails with some very steep hills. No shade. I wish trip advisor would fix the problem with the photo selector so you could pull photos from your phone because then you could see how beautiful it is and not be put off by the hills and... More

I took my daughter fishing here, she's 7, We had to pay to enter the park and then we had to pay for the priveledge to fish, I don't have fishing license, no intent to fish, didn't catch fish, we paid for the fish anyway, I disagree with that reality, never fishing there again.

I enjoy fishing and the campsites are great. swimming at the southend of the lake. campsites fill up on weekends. but during the week it is slow. Kids take over on the weekends and can get rowdy, but park rangers take care of things. Bathrooms and showers are cleaned regularly. I love this place.

The facility seems brand new. All of the equipment is well kept and well organized. The staff that helped us on a weekday morning was totally helpful. He answered all of our questions on fishing tips and shared the rules of the lake in a friendly manner. We like to fish from a boat or kayak and were happy to... More

We have always lives near this reservoir but never visited until yesterday. It is beautiful and extremely well maintained. They are set up for a days worth of family or personal fun in the outdoors. Hiking, fishing, boat!rentals, and a fully set up store to take care of anything missed.

My husband and I discovered this gem of a reservoir right after it opened some years ago. We both are avid fishermen, but my husband was having some mobility issues so many of our normal holes were off-limits to us. Paved parking lots, easy lakeside trails, fishing spots anywhere you can park your chair... There are also electric boats to... More
