Oh so much to say!!!!! So far this is at the top of my list of lifetime experiences (other than marriage and my kiddos of coarse). If you can obtain an overnight do try! We won dates in Oct in the lottery but I was able to get better dates in the random release. I even secured 2 nights, just... More

Although the goal for most users of this trail is to get to the top of Mt. Whitney, there are a lot of interesting stops, and several campgrounds, along the way, so it will be a great visit even if you don't make it to the top. This is a popular trail, and you have to get a permit (check... More

We drove up portal road and there were awesome views but unfortunately the road was closed before the trail head due to snow and slides. Clear views of Mt. Whitney so I got great pictures.

SO scenic!!! Get your wilderness pass before going! Plenty of making, and bear proof containers to leave anything 'smelly' in. The blur says its an arduous climb, but apart from the altitude it wasn't so hard. Well worth the effort!

This is not a walk in the park. If you are just a sightseer or a photographer, the ride up to the trail head offers few spots to pull over. The parking lot at the top of the rode is deep in the woods and offers no vistas. Gawk at the majesty of the mountain from the Alabama Hills. You... More

Loved this hike but DO YOUR HOMEWORK and BE PREPARED!. I did it in 13 hours as a day hike and felt very prepared in terms of my ascent and descent plans. I was very surprised to see many unprepared hikers w/o trekking poles, proper backpack, proper clothing ( I encountered snow and sleet). Started at 4am in the pitch... More

We did the 22 miles and 6100' elevation gain in one day---I do not recommend doing this as it was very hard. You need to be in very good shape. We hike a lot and trained with some long hikes to prepare for this. We started at 4:30 am and finished at 9 pm. We took Portal Stores advice and... More

We came to this trail after visiting Alabama Hills. It was very busy on a Sunday afternoon and we saw quite a few people that looked like they had spent the previous night in the wilderness. We only hiked part of the trail but if in the area again will do more. It was a beautiful place and it is... More

Arrived around 2pm on a Saturday - the parking lot was full, the smell of the pines seemed like heaven - but without a permit to hike we were very limited in what we could do here. We will need to plan better and return to this pretty campground/trailhead.

We went from the Alabama Hills to the Whitney Portal. We did not climb the mountain, but the waterfall just next to the parking lot was great.
