This reminded me of the haystacks in Oregon. Easy access, nice views of otters, pelicans, and bay. Nice trail for strolling, beach on the other side. Went several times during my stay.

Worth driving closer to the rock and exploring it. I am sure there is a lot to do around the place and a couple of days would make it worthwhile - the wildlife, boat tours etc. This was the first time we had seen it on our drive from the Bay area to Los Angeles. There was lots of parking and people were walking on the long beach along Morro Bay. Unfortunately, we were pressed for time and had not done much research but definitely it is a place worth coming back to.

We went after dinner and there was plenty of parking. We walked as far as we could and enjoyed the wildlife. Very pretty views.

Always a great place to walk around, to go birding and watch sea otters. You also see sea lions and lots of wildlife. We love to go to Morro Bay and wonder around this area.

A big old rock at the north end of the bay with plenty of parking and a nice quarter mile boardwalk out to the rock (or you can drive out there and there is also parking but more limited). The main attraction are the year round sea otters (about 30 of them) that live on the south side of the rock - apparently they move from the "Otter viewing pier (it's on google maps), another 1/2 mile south, to the south side of the rock in the PM. It was a rare and fun experience to just watch them for 30 minutes, well worth the time.

I was at Morro rock a few years ago but only walked on the beach. On this trip, I discovered the side by side walking bike path. It was wonderful! It ran along the water.

You can drive and park at the base of this rock then hike part way around it. There isnt a path all the way around.

Beautiful place! Each night looking out at the rock is different based on the weather. Calm and peaceful. So many different species of birds!. They are awesome to watch and make for great wildlife photography. Well worth a visit!

We liked Morro Rock so much last year we returned this year. The sea otters, birds, rock related things, and proximity to town and wharf make it quite an attraction.

This spot defines the coastline. It is a wild contrast to the power plant towers that at a couple of hundred yards away. Breakwater makes for good crashing surf. Nice.

From Big Sur, it will be before San Luis Obispo. You can't miss it driving down Highway 1.

No climbing is allowed. You can pretty much walk right up to it.
You can also enjoy some very nice tide pools at its base.

What can expect to see in mid/late January?

There is a great Bird Festival weekend in mid-January. It is also pupping season at the elephant seal rookery just north of San Simeon, less than an hour away. Lots of year-round hiking in Morro Bay, Montaña de Oro, Irish Hills.

Is it possible to climb Morro Rock? If so, how technical?

Sorry, it is illegal to climb the Rock as it disturbs the birds and their nesting areas. I think someone tried a while back to propose to his girl friend and got arrested.
I think some of the parks in the area have hiking areas.
