Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

I was a little concerned when the GPS kept taking us up a winding mountain road, especially because it was a foggy, rainy day, but once we got to the top, I was reassured. Given that it wasn't a nice day, this was the perfect spot to be. The inside of the winery is just as beautiful as the outside,... More

We are wine club members at Hess and made a return visit to see the art museum which is superb. There were some new pieces. We also took the time to see their interesting 10 minute movie on the winery and art collection. The projection movie room is nice. Its on the 2nd floor and they announced when the movie... More

Experience the Vineyard Tour here. Wear your hiking boots or tennis shoes and spend time learning about the vineyard. We were there in September and learned so much about the vines and even got to pick some grapes. It's a beautiful tour. Go in the morning while its still cool and then enjoy the tasting time after spending time in... More

Beautiful building with a world class art museum. Plan about 2 and 1/2 hour visit. Lots to see in the World class museum and views of both Sanoma and Napa valleys from the decks.

We visited the Hess Collection Winery and Art Museum as part of Platypus Wine Tours that 5 of my girlfriends and I joined. I'm so glad we visited this winery as it turned out to be my favorite. The tour guide took us out into the vineyards and talked to us in detail about the old growth grapevines, etc. Very... More

Hess is quite distinctive grapes grow over steep hills and the winery is an art collection. The experience is a must to art lovers, Hess is able to blend art and wine masterfully. We had a tasting in the cellar for 10 of our family, very intimate, enriched by wine and information on the Hess Family and their operation. The... More

The building and surrounding grounds are lovely. The collection of art is very nice. And of course, the wines are wonderful.

We did a tasting at Hess in the cellar room during a Platypus wine tour. The wines were of excellent quality compared to some other vineyards we went to. We also got to walk around in the vineyards, which was pretty cool. The location and buildings at Hess are beautiful. Great for pictures.

Glad we got to experience this winery but the road is not for the faint of heart - quite windy and no guard rails - although we traveled on a rainy, overcast day I was concerned about the oncoming traffic on some of the turns. Being familiar with Hess wines we felt rushed through the tasting. We did enjoy the... More

We drove up the Hess in a heavy rain and would never do it again unless the weather and roads were dry. The last few miles were on a very windy road, narrow and not well maintained. Had planned to taste their wine but didn't want to drink anything with the prospect of driving back. I selected Hess because of... More
