Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. Deep, rocky, volcanic soils provide a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone build hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins. Wine tasting & tours daily. Culinary experiences include pairings with small plates, artisan cheese and chocolates.

Hess Collection is a great trip if you're in that part of the valley. The courtyard is nice to relax in, plenty of shade under the pergola to enjoy wine. The wines and the tasting are fantastic! I wasn't too impressed with the art collection, though.

Went for the museum. Interesting modern art. Well manicured grounds. Fancy wine tasting area. Spent quite a while talking to the gift shop guy. Learned about wine and cork. Didn't spend any money, but enjoyed the information offered!

A lovely drive up the mountain to this off the beaten path winery. Reservations are a must so plan ahead. These are really good wines at affordable prices. Reserve wines are recommended. They are renovating the outside of the old estate so be prepared. Not to fret as the inside has all the charm, great friendly reception and at the... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our tasting but would have loved to have someone who was a bit more educational and passionate about the wines. We were on a time constraint and unfortunately did not have enough time to see the art

I went here the first time in the 80's and was working as a cater waiter at a private party in the dining room off of the the museum. It has stayed with me for years. I have been back with friends many times and have recommended visits for many friends visiting Sonoma and Napa.

Loved their wine and the setting. Did a $25 tasting for a flight of four wines. Part of the building was still under construction, and the second floor of the museum part was closed, but still, the setting was very nice. Controlled (waited for about half hour) atmosphere, so it was calm and wasn't crowded at all. Knowledgeable and nice... More

We just returned from Hess Winery. Super scenic drive up and back. Lovely garden area in front of a historically preserved building encased in ivy looking plants. Interesting art gallery on multiple floors all elevator-accessed. Very good wines especially the whites. My career before retiring was time and motion studies. I liked the tasting room configuration. For the guests and... More

We did the wine/cheese pairing and tour for $75 pp. The 2nd floor was under renovation (not disclosed on website) and unavailable to see art. The art is very modern and not quite our style of modern art. After pairing we bought over $200 in wine, but was charged full price for pairing ($150) - most wineries give you 2... More
