Killer waves

This is the best place to watch local surfers, the waves get pretty huge at times and the water can be dangerous if you aren't experienced.

I can see how this would be an amazing place to watch surfers when conditions are right, but they weren't on the nice day we visited.

Located all the way at the end of the Balboa Peninsula. There is a rock jetty built to contain the waves and when the surf comes in just right, the waves bounce back against each other causing a wedge. The resulting wedge can reach heights of thirty feet. Fun to watch the pros surf the waves; not a place to... More

not much to say about the Wedge. if you aren't experienced, you probably shouldn't go. got the worst wipe out of my life when the bottom dropped out and I found myself riding the bottom with my chest. great bodysurfing. powerful, beautiful, awesome.

We stopped by to see the amazing waves and all the crazy people body surfing the waves. This is actually a beautiful spot on the Balboa peninsula. This little area feels like you stepped into a "Trumanville" area. There were plenty of people out enjoying the waves and just as many people just sitting and watching. Read up about it... More

Unless you're a very strong swimmer and don't flinch at seeing your life flash before your eyes, I don't recommend swimming/surfing/body surfing/boogie boarding at The Wedge. This is more of a great place to watch the greats go to play at what they do best.....and especially when the surf is way high, like double overheaders or bigger! Because of the... More

We use this as our destination when biking on our vacation to Newport each year. It has been exciting at times and just another beach at others. If you are not a surfer, and it's not during a comp, it's hard to imagine how epic and legendary this location is.

Absolutely gorgeous, large stretch of beach adjacent to multi-million dollar beach homes. Amazing spot to watch surfers and bodyboarding. On the other side of the rocks you can watch boats of all sizes go in and out of the harbor. No public restrooms.

Been coming here since I was a kid and this time was just as epic! It's called the Wedge because it's where the South and West swells converge. This beach IS NOT FOR TOURISTS TO SWIM!! You may go watch but DO NOT GO IN THE WATER. Many locals are killed or paralyzed here annually. Just come and watch the... More

We have visited the Wedge often for body surfing, which can be a bit of a challenge when the surf is up. Beginners should stay on the beach in these conditions. It can get a bit crowded in the water, and you need to be careful of the rocks on the jetty, but the body surfing experience is intensive, though... More
