Staying near the lake, we walked it several times. Renovations and construction to improve are underway. Lighting at night is minimal, but pretty and there's a fountain going most of the day. Great place for a run.

For an inner city lake it's pretty nice. This place has lights completely surrounding the lake which is quite beautiful at night. The area is becoming gentrified and quite nice.

Our romantic Oakland/San Francisco getaway weekend started with a lovely stroll through the Lake Merritt gardens. Definitely something to plan if you enjoy flowers, succulents, and bonsai! Plan to get there by 2 p.m. though as the gates close at 4.

Nothing around lake and it was under construction when we were visiting. No place to eat or grab a drink and enjoy lake view. Very disappointed.

This park has some very nice gardens. There are lots of people picnickig. There are boats for rent at the lake Marina. THe view of the Oakland skyyline with the upscale neighborhood is attractive.

Our friends and family treasure this lake, right in the center of the city. Parking on the street is almost always available, if you have patience in looking for a space. If not, there is paid parking lot under the 580 freeway, off of Lakeshore....More

So you're in Oakland, and it's not The City. Forget the murmurings about this very fine community and enjoy some great surprises. First on the list should be Lake Merritt. It's an easy walk from your hotel, most likely. It's big, but it's not too...More

Lots to do in & around Lake Merritt. The walk itself is just a little over 3 miles. Flat paved walking with great views. Farmers market on weekend and a ton of restaurants very close within walking distance. 3 hour free parking around the lake!

If you fall in by accident, go directly to a shower with serious soap. The water is in no way clean or safe.
