Next time you are in Oakland, give yourself an exercise treat: walk (or drive) the few blocks from the downtown hotels to Lake Merritt, then run (or walk) the path around the lake. Beautiful views. Lots of happy people. "Necklace of Lights" is beautiful. About 3.1 miles around. Don't miss this. I prefer mornings, but evenings nice too. No safety... More

Well worth the trip. Spent mothers day there with my wife and our daughter and family friend. Wife is a Horticulturist and loved the gardens. Amazing display of Bonsai. Hte gardens are a hidden gem.

Relative to its urban surroundings, this respite of nature is a welcome mystery. I've been here in many different seasons, and it always seems welcoming and alive. Part of the draw is simply that it is not-city (no offense to Oakland, I just don't like cities). But there's many more layers here, including a stunning Japanese Garden, a Bonzai Tree... More

Lake Merritt is a nice place for an afternoon stroll. I only walked half the lake. On the north side is the The Gardens at Lake Merritt.

Lake Merritt is a 3-31/2 mile lake in the downtown portion of Oakland. Every day you will see people walking themselves or their dogs, or running, or just exploring the lake and it's grounds. There is plenty of sidewalk space and even a walking, running path in certain areas. On the Grand Avenue side you'll find plenty of restaurants and... More

Never knew there was a lake in the center of Oakland very nice for a last minute picnic. Ride a bike, or just to park & enjoy the view. So glad I found it.

My wife and I lived in Oakland for 4 years and loved coming down to the lake. We enjoyed walking our dog around, and would drop into lots of the local dog friendly bars- any one with a patio and many of the others as long as they don't have a kitchen attached. Dogs have to be on leash on... More

Definitely a must see part of Oakland. Enjoy a walk by the lake anytime. It was very safe with many families enjoying themselves.

A winding 3 or so mile walk around a lake and oldest estuary restoration! Perfect to walk around and burn off dinner or lay out on a Saturday afternoon and people watch. Big open sky with city and nature views. Great little bonsai garden within.
